Native resolution display issue

My new Samsung 24" displays perfectly in the 1680x1050 resolution but when put into the native 1920x1080 resolution some of the viewing around at the top, bottom and sides is lost i.e. the picture now appears to big for the screen - is there a way of solving this or is 1680x1050 the proper display resolution?

Thanks in advance.

Surveyor, appreciate the quick response - hoping that it was a simple solution and that therefore specifications might not be necessary - so here is the information:

Samsung B2430H 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black
Gainward GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
HDMI connection cable

The NVIDIA control panel suggests that 1920x1080 is the native resolution but the PC mode indicated reaches only 1680x1050

Thanks again surveyor - happy to use a DVI cable if there is no loss in fidelity or quality - I'm using external speakers for sound as you intuited. Will try the suggestions you have made.

PCM2 - tried suggestion but left with the same problem and an emphatically blue tint to the screen - going with the 1680x1050 until getting the DVI cable - thanks though.
