Your heatpipe contraption is very similar to mine. It is actually in two pieces. SB to NB and above the mosfets. The other half is an L shape one covering the mosfets. There is no need to remove that one. I have'nt and mine is fine. If you have used the board you will have "fun" trying to remove the heatsinks from the NB and SB. Asus uses a epoxy type TIM which actually glues them to the chipsets. I did mine as soon as i got it and still had to use a hairdryer (very carefully) to remove them. Even then i was left with rock hard TIM on the NB IHS (it's not bare) which i had to carefully remove with a stanley knife blade. I have a XSPC X20 Delta block on the NB and a lapped Zalman NB heatsink (the orange one) on the SB which does'nt get very warm at all. I know your's is X48 and mine is X38 but there's no difference as yours is nothing more than a cherry picked X38 so what works for mine should work for yours.
