Im in the market for a netbook, because I dont spend a lot of time in the house anymore. I don't spend a lot of time gaming anymore. I spend most of my time on forums/facebook/youtube, although I would like to be able to do a bit of gaming when im out and about. My budget is around the £300 mark, but I might be able to stretch a bit more if the NC20 is worth it.
Now im well aware that these netbooks are far from gaming machines, although I know they can handle some light gaming (eg Quake 3, Unreal Tournament etc)

What im interested to know is which of the 2 would be better at running these old games?
Are there any articles around that compare the gaming performance of these 2 netbooks?

Cheers.

I've been playing Unreal Tournament on my NC10 with no trouble, it will just about play Halo aswell but it's a bit to **** to bother with.

Anything thats older than Halo is normally alright.

I wouldn't bother with the NC20, they look much bigger for the extra screen size, and the only time I missed having a 1280 wide resolution was viewing websites, but I just got a plugin for firefox called NoSquint and set the standard zoom to 90%, makes a much bigger difference than you would have thought!

is the NC10 still ok and good value? would it play CS:S?

i noticed it's been out since last year and i'm not familiar with the dual cores/intel setup?

the NC10 is probably one of the best value netbooks out there, although I doubt it could run CS:S at any kind of playable framerates.

I have a question though. I've been wondering if its better for me to just get a laptop rather than a netbook if I plan on do a bit of gaming. I hear that a laptop with a better spec than a netbook can be had for roughly the same price.
I really don't mind going with a laptop instead of a netbook, if it means I get a slightly better spec system.
Can anyone recommend some laptops in the £300 price range that can run some decent games (quake 3, WoW, UT etc)

Cheers :)

The NC20 is an excellent netbook, nice 12.1` screen, great for movies, browsing the net and good for older games that need 1280x800 to run without having to edit anything, very similar in power to a NC10, you won't notice much difference between them in real world terms, definately get a cheap laptop though if you want to play more demanding games newer than after 2004.

NC20 has better and louder sound quality than a NC10 too.

who says?

Anyway, i've decided to wait untill the end of the month for the Samsung N510 to be released. It uses the ion platform so it should be perfect for some light gaming.

Netbooks arnt for any type of gaming...

I can't really think of a more appropriate platform for MMOs like WoW. You can carry the game anywhere and play it whenever you like instead of having to make "game time".

Once Ion netbooks come to market and drop in to the £200-£300 price bracket i can see mobile gaming being quite popular. The machines will be powerfull enough to run most popular titles (Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike: Source, World of Warcraft etc.) and integrated mobile broadband will allow multiplayer gaming anywhere. While the experience won't be as good as on a home PC i know that i'd happily use a netbook for the occasional stint.

The NC10 doesnt have a good graphics card, the netbook itself was built to do NETBOOK things, just as internet, music and afew videos..

While creating them they didnt even think about gaming, its just because its got a GFX card which can handle some games in low settings..

It prob can run Team Fortress 2, CS:S etc, however it would be PLAYABLE at the least, very slow frames per second etc.

If it can run it, why not use it for gaming? So what if it wasn't designed for it. It's not like anybody would even try to run something like Crysis on the things. It's just a little bit of casual gaming to supplement something like a powerful desktop or console.

Anyway, I'm waiting for the Lenovo S12. I was considering an NC10 / NC20 but the allure of the ION got to me, so I'm holding out for it. Should retail around £400 too, and it might actually be able to run something along the lines of CoD4 if you use some of the majorly stripped down graphical configs.
