NCD Proof

I was just wondering is there a maximum allowed time that an insurer must have sent proof of no claims within? I have been contacting my old insurer for nearly 3 weeks requesting this and they keep promising to send me proof but haven't received it yet. Reading elsewhere it seems to suggest 7-21 days but I aren't sure if this is a guideline or something they must do.

My new insurer has e-mailed me saying that unless I send them proof within two weeks they will issue a cancellation notice and then within a couple of days cancel the policy. They will also charge £50 for the and I will have insurance cancelled against my name which obviously I don't want.

I am going to phone my old insurer again soon, possibly threatening to make a complaint to the suitable authority, but would feel better knowing my threats carried some weight behind them knowing that they had only so long to send it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Whenever I've changed insurers its just been a case of sending a copy of the renewal quote through as it always said how much NCD they were applying. Did you not get an automatic renewal quote from the old insurers ?

If you're moving from one insurance to another, the renewal letter usually suffices. If you're not at the end of your policy though that won't be very helpful :)

edit: beaten!

I am a bit concerned that my new insurer Hastings haven't asked me for my proof of no claims yet. I checked on their website and they seem to say they will check it themselves if provided with your old insurer but I haven't told them who my old insurer was and have never been asked.

I guess they can find out pretty easily on their systems though and go from there.

They can take a verbal from your old insurer to prolong the time.

I arranged new insurance the other day, the policy doesn't start until 04/04. My current insurer won't release my NCB until the policy ends. Yet I get a letter from my new insurer saying I have 7 days.

Quick call and they phoned current insurer for a verbal which will cover me for 21 days after the policy begins.

Seeing that insurance companies share information all this NCB thing is a pain in the backside. There again I know people who stick with an insurance company paying well over the odds to avoid this hassle. Guess it works for them.

I always use renewal notice/quote, that should state the amount of NCD and to date that's has been fine except I think with Aviva who for some reason at that time insisted that they needed confirmation by contacting my old/current insurer but was then told that the old/current insurer for some reason refused to talk to them. A few quick phones soon sorted that out.

For my wifes car, I'm currently with Hastings whose renewal quote was an obscene £1400, paid £637 the year before. I got an online quote for around the same as I paid last year with Hastings so decided to buy it online but it wouldn't let me so had to buy the policy via their call centre. The women mentioned something about proof of NCD even though she knew I was currently with Hastings. Will have to see what happens.

My wife just renewed hers with churchill (when i say renew she took out a new policy as its cheaper thatn accepting the renewal). She currently is with churchill and theyve sent a letter asking for proof of no claims from the previous company i.e. themselves  Useless doesnt cover it.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I didn't receive any renewal notification from my old insurer. I just received a letter asking me to contact them as I hadn't responded the renewal notification that they had sent out. They gave me the renewal over the phone which I declined as it was £160 more than the comparison sites. It was at this point I first asked them to send proof out as I knew I would need it.

I will try calling my new insurer and explain the situation and see if they can get verbal confirmation.

Surely it would have been far easier just to call them up and reduce the renewal?

This reminds me of a guy I used to work with, who managed to end up with two policies from the same company. For some reason he assumed if he signed up as a new customer via a comparison site they'd cancel his automatic renewal.

I still remember him ringing the insurers and saying 'ello, I think I've bought two insurances'. :D

As far as proof of no claims goes do you have any old cover notes. In the past I've forgotten to send in proof of no claims and after about 6 weeks they adjusted the price of my policy and send me a bill for the extra.
