Hi

What is the deal with using NCD on 2 cars?

I have a car on which I have full NCD. I now need to purchase an additional smaller car as well which I will need to insure in my name.

Can I use this NCD on the second car as well? When I renewed last year I was sent a poof of NCD certificate.

No, you cannot. I had this for a while.

I had insurance on my "business" car and a seperate policy on my "weekend" car.

The weekend car had 7 years NCB and the business car had 2 years. This was because I paid for my "weekend" and my company paid for the "business" car insurance as part of my job.

You have to have 2 seperate policy line, but as I sold my "weekend car" last year, the NCB totals then can be pooled together and it gave me a total of 9 years NCB when it came to renewal - I think this may depend on the insurance company though.

each car has a separate insurance policy, with their separate no claims bonus.

So, to keep any ncd, afaik you need to either move to a multicar policy or find an insurer that will mirror your existing ncd (which will involve phoning insurers as I don't think mirrored ncd is an option on the comparison sites). It gets complicated with a claim tho - as the other car still has its NCD (as you've not claimed through that policy), but you still need to inform that insurer of a claim on the other policy, so the rates will go up anyway - as far as I understand the situation.

Yes, you can.

You need to find an insurer that offers mirrored NCD.

Greenlight Insurance offer this, and while they didn't do it for me I know of at least 2 people who currently insure 2 cars with mirrored NCD on them.

Admiral also do it with their Multi Car policies. I had both my Skoda and my track day Clio insured with them on a Multi Car policy with a single 9 years NCD applied to the Skoda and then mirrored onto the Clio. The Skoda was Fully Comp while the Clio was TPFT. Again I also know of at least one other person doing this. Admiral Multi Car is also likely to be your cheapest option for insuring 2 cars aswell, as their prices are already competitive and the Multi Car discount brings them down even further.

Edit:

Bonus Match
Bring a second car to us and, in most cases, we'll match your No Claims Bonus on that vehicle as well.

Thanks for the replies. I will give me insurance company a call to see if they will mirror it.
