NCD Question

Hey all. I pretty much do the same thing every time I change car but thought I would see what you all think.

So I had a car running with my NCD tied to it, and this is now for sale.

Found the car I wanted to buy to replace it.

Bought the new car with a policy claiming my no claims discount from a previous vehicle.

However the previous car is still insured as it hasn't sold yet so technically I have 2 policies with this NCD claimed on them if that makes sense. The new company hasn't asked for proof of no claims yet. And obviously once the old car sells that policy will be cancelled.

Could any of this ever be an issue? Like down the line if I made a claim and they saw I actually still had the old policy running when I started the new one etc?

Probably over thinking it, it's how I've always done it and I imagine others do the same.

I'm not using the old car, it's garaged until sold but I need it insured to take potential buyers for a drive Vs cancelling it and risking issues in that regard.

Are both cars insured by the same company? I expect they will want proof of NCD at some point, you'll have that from your last renewal but I've no idea if the IT systems and data sharing of insurers would be able to match up a NCD already being in use in the same way they can for previous claims and so on.

I've no idea if they will cancel a policy if they found out that you were using one NCD on two vehicles or just ask you to pay the difference. You don't want an insurer to cancel your policy though. Was it a big difference in price between using the NCD or not? I've got something like 15 years NCD and the difference between using it on the Zoe or not was only around £50 or so.

How long do you think the NCD would be applied to both policies?

Yeah I doubt it would flag up or anything, just potentially come up if a claim is ever made maybe.

I'm cancelling the old policy once that car is sold but tbh I could just cancel it now. I'm not using the car, it's just for incase someone wants to view it and go for a drive really.

I must admit I didn't get a quote without NCD as I always just go from one car to another, in the same way as I have this time. I imagine it's quite a common scenario so probably over thinking it.

Funnily enough, the original car renews tomorrow. Which Is why this came up really as I could just cancel it now as it's at the end anyway, but again I think I should let it roll over for sake of people viewing the car

You're committing fraud as you don't have any NCD to use on your new policy and you've knowingly made a false declaration for financial gain.
Now wether it would ever come to light is a different question.

This. You’re using your NCD on two separate policies which is not allowed, and both companies could decide to void their policy’s if one found out.

Yeah my thinking exactly. I think I'll just cancel the old one (it renews tomorrow, last payment on it was made almost a month ago, before I started the new policy a few days ago). So I have that renewal policy which acts as proof of no claims, which I can pass on to the new provider if they ask though I don't think they will on this occasion

I think then that's fine, and any viewers I'll just explain it's not insured.

Or I could then just take out a new policy for the old car with no NCD claimed on it. And just cancel when it sells, which could even be within the first 14 days

Cancelled the renewal, either way it would run it's course until end of play tomorrow. They will send me no claims proof and I have all the emails about the renewal from before buying the new car etc.

Did a quick quote for my old car without NCD and it's essentially the same price. So I may just take out a separate policy tomorrow and cancel it once sold. Safest bet I think. It's technically an offense to have a car in the garage that isn't insured, unless SORN'D. So covers my bases. More chance of getting his by a meteor, I know :D
