I posted this in Storage by mistake and it is a bit of a wide ranging subject but as it started as thing about a new CPU cooler aso I thought I'd post here

OK...I have the following

Gigabyte GA- MA 970XT-UDP4 MB
AMD Phenom II 955 X4 3.2 GHZ CPU AM3
Arctic Cooling 7 pro
Sapphire HD5770 512mb
2 x 2gb G-Skill DDR3 1600MHz
Antec tower case

All bought around Dec 2009

The case with its PSU is quality but I mainly use it for browsing, lots of photo post production and some offline gaming, COD and that sort of thing. However in normal use I'm finding that the CPU fan is very noisy. CPU runs at around 44

Question is I could get a quiet CPU cooler and if so which one is recommended ?

Other question as although I am clearly not a heavy user would it be "better" to get an up to date MB and CPU...Intel or AMD and CPU cooler ? Again, if so recommendations bearing in mind my usage and that my current OK rig is 2.5 years old.

I don't need thundering performance obviously but this started out as a "I need a new quiet CPU cooler" and well, I started thinking..... ;)

I have the same CPU cooler in one of my builds and I can't hear a thing from it. Sure that is the source of the noise and not a case fan?

As for a upgrade you could upgrade to a Intel i5 with an new motherboard. The new Ivy Bridge range appears to be top dog in comparison to the recent AMD FX release.

This would be a wonderful motherboard and CPU upgrade:
YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £173.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £109.99
Total : £295.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

The i5 3570K is unlocked and is pretty powerful. It can run just about any game on max. The Z77 Gigabyte board also allows for easy overclocking and is packed full of features.

If you wanted a much cheaper upgrade you could get a SSD which would improve your overall computing experience and is sooooo much faster than a mechanical hard drive. Everything would seem far more responsive and quicker. I would recommend a Crucial M4, simply because it's reliable and one of the cheaper ones on Overclockers :)

That looks like a nice setup...

The noise is definitely the fan and its running at around 2000rpm according to the gigabyte Utility as well as the AMD one...maybe its feeling its age or the compound has dried up. Might try removing the cooler and resitting with new compound. CPU is a high 52 degrees and all I'm doing is browsing. Just reversed slight overclocking but its still the same

Oh and just installed a crucial M4 128GB...very impressed.....
