its me again!

right, bit by bit im building up my new system via MM and my cousin and OcUK of course :D just wanted to make a final check on the parts that will be in it and if it could be improved in any way (something slightly more expensive or even an alternate component brand etc)

so i have:
3.2 P4 (478)
6800GT (agp)
1.5GB value 3200 Ram

i want to move to a more up to date AMD 939 build with PCI-E which after looking at what i have, will take some doing as i cant really use any existing parts.

i have this build in mind:
AMD X2 3800+, 4400+ (depends on price drops)
Dfi Lanparty ultra d OR Asus A8N - E *need help here*
X1800xt
Corsair XMS 3200 Cas 2 (2x1gb)
WD 2 x Raptor drives

sorry for long post, but need help to see if this is all ok together? and finally would i be able to buy the ASUS board and still get a good build (would it affect overclocking a lot or just a bit - not a huge overclocker myself and would i notice the comparison between it and the DFI)

;) cheers

If you can afford to upgrade all those parts at once then that is great but you could also consider the ASRock SATA Dual II motherboard as it allows you to use both AGP or PCI-E graphics cards.

Otherwise what you have selected is a good choice, Asus motherboards aren't known for overclocking ability in general but should be enough for most people :)

well.. i have a budget of *Around* £200 for the CPU im not upgrading all at once, but i will be buying the CPU and GPU at the same time, as these are the most expensive parts for me!

will my 480Watt PSU (tagan) be sufficient?

The 4600+ should be around £160 I think, but that's before tax and before we find out how nice the shops are feeling. Either way, should be below £200 by a fair amount, I am looking into buying one myself. :)

A Tagan 480w is more than sufficient. I am running my system on a 460w Akasa and my case is full of those silly cathodes, LEDs, and fans not to mention that I sometimes run with some pretty crazy overclocks.

haha nice one! well PSU can stay then, your saying the 4600+ is being massively reduced? why arent the lower models below it being reduced? wouldnt that make sense surely to sell off lower performing stock so the higher chips can compete? just curious!

if its below the £200 mark :p the better!

The Asus will have some overclocking options and Asus motherboards are generally rock-solid in my experience but you won't get all the options for tweaking that you would with a DFI. Basically to paraphrase an old saying - if you have to ask about overclocking the DFI isn't necessary. Either board will work fine but if you are saving money with the Asus it will offer enough to satisfy a bit of overclocking but nothing too extreme :)
