Ordered the nebula 10.1 for my wife's birthday as she's always stealing my Nexus. I've done a bit more looking and I'm a little bit confused.
The Nebula 10.1 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TB-002-OT
The Nebula 10.1 V2 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TB-015-OT&groupid=959&catid=1882&subcat=

Looking at the two the Nebula V2 is £5 more expensive but has identical hardware however it also has a much poorer lower resolution TN panel over the Nebula 10.1's higher resolution IPS panel.

Am I missing something blatantly obvious or is the second version poorer than the first? Also the Nebula 10.1 seems almost identical to the £25 more expensive Ultima http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TB-006-OT&groupid=959&catid=1882&subcat=

Anyone from overclockers able to clarify the spec differences. It gets delivered today and i'll only have 5 days to swap it if I've missed something.

Many thanks Leli

Well after all the many replies I've had from overclockers  I received the tablet today. Below i'll clarify some of the questions and things I've found.

1) On opening the box I found a very small piece of broken plastic. Not sure where it's come from and I cant find any damage so I'll just keep an eye out.

2) The tablet comes with ICS on booting. It's not my wife's birthday till Friday so I'll keep you updated if it has an upgrade.

3) Not clear on the sales page and overclockers haven't exactly rushed to clarify but the processor is upto A9 Dual Core Cortex CPU 1.5Ghz not the advertised 1.6Ghz.

4) Also not clear on the sales page but it does have the Mali 400 quadcore GPU.

5) The battery according to the packaging is a 6600mAh however the website states it is a 3000mAh. This is a significant difference.

6) The screen on the box states 10.1" 5 points touch. The instruction book states 10" 10 point touch. Either way it is an IPS 1280x800 pixel screen which looks pretty amazing on the bootscreen.

7) The website states upto 32gb micro SD, the instruction book states upto 64gb Micro SD.

To summarise:
Ignore everything that the overclockers webpage says and disbelieve whatever is on the box and in the instruction book as all 3 have so much conflicting information and discrepancies that the Sales of goods act would have a field day. If a shop tried to sell a product with such rubbish information there would be hell to pay, you pay your money and it's like entering an overclockers lottery.

I'm going to wait for my wife to go to bed tonight and then i'm going to sitdown and try to work out what the hell I've got. If i'm not happy it'll be going back.

On a more personal note I've been using overclockers for 10+ years and in the last year it saddens me to say that the support isn't half what it was. I guess as a company expands it becomes more distanced from the people who made it what it is. It was once my dream job to relocate from the north-east and work at overclockers.

Great post, thank you. I have been keeping an eye on a few OC models and similarly have spent ages comparing the differences in specs, some of which seem tiny.

Your comprehensive report has also highlighted something that I wasn't aware of, or foolishly thought was the case - that OC actually build the non-branded tablets. The discrepancies in the website & the instruction book confirm otherwise.

I'd be very interested in an update once you've had a proper look.....

Ok little update as i'm only supposed to be charging it and not using it. If an admin wants me to remove anything please email or message me and i'll remove it straight away.

If you aren't tech minded and just want my verdict so far scroll to the bottom.

Here's what I've managed to pull so far

1) If this had a birth certificate it's name would be GENERIC. Its a mixture of decent hardware (not perfect, see below) and lazy software. For example when you start it up you are greeted with a picture of an icecream van even though it's using Jellybean 4.1.1.

2) Don't expect any targeted support. This is a rooted device so upgrading is not for novices like my wife, i'd like to put 4.1.2 on the device which I have on my Nexus but it'd be a far from point and click process. I wouldn't expect too much in the way of support.

3) The wifi is truly horrific. If I sit near my router it's ok but if I move to the living room it dies a death (I sat in the same spot with a Nexus7 and Blackberry Playbook and had no problems).....which leads me on to another point, the device doesn't seem to like multitasking online ie if I download off the play store it fails 90% of the time if I try to load a webpage or search the store. Maybe this could be fixed with an update.

4) The webpage suggests Touch Panel Capacitive Multi-touch (Glass on Glass). This definitely 100% isn't glass, it's plastic all the way. It also scans as being 1280x752

5) I'm going to list a few hardware specs, I know OCUK want as little as possible revealed on this (hence no reviews) but it's not like competitors can't just order one and do what I've done. Anyway here goes

The manufacturer is Rockchip and the model is U101

a) Processor is the ARMv7 2 cores running a maximum 1608mhz
b) Ram 862mb usable, the rest must be OS and bits and pieces.
c) I've found no mention of Bluetooth on the device, booklet or website. This is a bit of a letdown.
d) The screen is 1280x752 160dpi. I guess the missing 48pixels is due to the toolbar which is pretty common practice. Mine has 1 green stuck pixel
e) It definitely has the MALI-400 MP scalable 1-4 core GPU which isn't listed but should be as i'd have thought it's a pretty good selling point.
f) A few sensors I've detected are Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Magnetic field sensor, light sensor and a decent microphone that picks up voice commands.

Conclusion so far:

I must admit for the price this is still a pretty damned nice piece of kit. Let me reword that...if the user is none tech savvy and doesn't notice things like version numbers, odd bootup screens etc (my wife lol) then this tablet is a steal. If you are tech savvy and love to mess about with rooted android stuff then this is a pretty inexpensive, large tablet to play with.

If like me you receive 20 emails/calls/texts every day because something isn't working right (the slow internet, difficult multitasking) don't buy this for a loved one, I've already had to explain to my wife I don't have a magic wand to make it run faster.

The screen (barring 1 pixel - I tend to live with this and use it as a way to identify my device: my psp 1 dead pixel centre top, my nexus 2 dead pixels 1cm right of centre, my dell monitor 1 stuck pixel 1cm up off bottom bezel, this tablet 1 green pixel bottom right) is bright, evenly lit and has good depth of colour and viewing angles.

If I can answer any other questions post them up and i'll do my best.

Colin,

I've felt uneasy actually hitting 'Add to basket' over the last 2 weeks (Nebula) and after reading this I'm very pleased I didn't.

I currently use a Tab 2 for work. It's pretty good IMO and for me has set the benchmark. One very strong point is the wi-fi - it's very sensitive and picks up numerous signals when out & about. Your comment about the Nebula ('horrific') is enough to make me look elsewhere.

Thanks....

James

I had a tab 2 and it was good value for money. I am now using a Note 10.1 which is a lot faster and once i installed the jellybean keyboard a lot more responsive as well.

Anyone at overclockers know if there will be an update to 4.2.1? That's the version on my nexus and I find the easy access dropdown menu for wifi and battery brilliant.

Also I've noticed that sometimes when entering text I get multiple clicks on the letters, this drives me crazy when trying to enter passwords. A full shutdown and restart seems to fix it but randomly it comes back.

Finally I stated above that a dead/stuck pixel doesn't bother me too much but my wifes spotted it (it is quite noticeable being green) especially on black backgrounds (Her wallpaper would be black). I know secretly that it's bothering her. It's officially her birthday on Friday and she'll be getting the tablet then, how long is the turnaround and whats the pixel policy if she can't live with it?

From replacing my tablet I can assure you that the policy is 7 dead/stuck pixels for an RMA. I bought an ultima that had 9(!) defective pixels but the replacement has been flawless for weeks now. You can always return under the distance selling regulations, OCUK honour the requests for 14 days instead of the required 7.

Can you send it back under the Distance Selling Regulations if the box has been opened? I've had this conundrum in the past where once a product is opened it is classed as used, how you check if it's the product for you without opening the box still beats me (BTW this wasn't with Overclockers).

distance selling act it regardless (well of course providing you aint jump on it or any thing really silly.

So yeah if you order online and dont like it u have every right to send it back with in 7 days for ANY reason what so ever.

And slowly the thread slid into oblivion with nary a glance from an overclockers representative. Oh well they have my money now, should have expected it.

All of the questions I asked i'll try to update myself in the hope it helps someone.

Firstly I'm still of the opinion that for £175 this is still a perfectly serviceable tablet and I doubt the average user would notice the things I find (remember I'm Mr picky). The wife is very happy with it.

Ok what have I learned after a little play today:

1) the stuck pixel is still stuck.
2) the wife hasn't removed the screen cover yet but the screen cover itself came absolutely covered in marks and scratches, it's as if an army of ice hockey playing mice used it as an ice rink.
3) when the screen is on but dark the IPS panel has vertical lines spaced every 2cm or so. Can't see them when the screen is lit. Never seen it before though.
3b) you might have noticed most of the things I have picked up have been screen related.
4)and 5) The thing doesn't charge through USB. I kid you not it's like stepping back to the 90's, the thing comes with a proper old fashioned plug in adapter. I'd ask if this is normal but i'd be deafened by the silence lol.
6) No Haribos

Well that's enough for now. I'll keep you all updated

5) The battery according to the packaging is a 6600mAh however the website states it is a 3000mAh. This is a significant difference.

Actually I noticed a lot of discrepancies like this on other OcUK tablets too. For example, this one:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TB-010-OT&groupid=959&catid=1882&subcat=

If you google the model number (ER71B) you find out the following:

>Battery: 7000mAh Rechargeable Li-Ion polymer
No, it's actually 3000mAh.

>Touch Panel Capacitive Multi-touch
Nope, it's a resistive touch screen.

Given it took me 5 seconds to find the manufacturer's page I can't really see how these mistakes are excusable, and it's exactly what put me off buying a tab from here a few weeks back.

Well its definitely a capacitive multitouch screen, that much I can safely say.

I very much doubt the battery is 7000mAh as the booklet says, although i'll give it a few charges and report back.

It would be really nice if someone from overclockers could get some solid information on this. I mean it seems crazy that the Ultima 10.1 v2 has a TN panel.

750 views, one of them must have been admin:p

edit: would love to know if it will indeed take a 64gb micro sd as the box says.

Yeah the Nebula probably is, just saying there's a lot of erroneous specs on the other tabs.

Try asking for further details in the customer service section, they were friendly enough when I tried in there. :)

Update:

The vertical 2cm lines really bug me, they are really visible on dark screens. Also in 2 places there is specks of black dust inside the screen.

On a more positive note the wife has been using this pretty much all day and the battery has put in a pretty good show. You should get a full day of use from the tablet, she's done a bit of angry birds, a bit of coin dozer, filled in a full years worth of calendar dates on Jorte which is a free app (don't even bother loading the google calendar, it crashes every 30 secs), she's also been browsing the web all day and getting regular football updates (get in Newcastle, beating Chelsea 3-2:p)

Ok

The screen is still the weakpoint in the package, see posts above.

The wireless antennae isn't that great but I've added a second wireless point in the livingroom and my wife says it's totally fixed the problem. My nexus and playbook had no problems with the wireless in the diningroom.

Bit of a request here. Does anyone have a guide on how to get Whatsapp on the tablet? My wife has it on her Galaxy phone but would prefer to run it just on the Nebula.

Cheers Leli

I know it's not FOR tablets however it can be put on tablets, especially but not just limited to rooted ones. This is one method:

- root your phone
- install whatsapp on your phone
- install TitaniumBackup on your phone
- with TitaniumBackup make a backup of whatsapp
- open file manager on your phone and look for TitaniumBackup folder
- take the 3 files with the whatsapp name in them and move these to your tablet

- root your tablet
- install TitaniumBackup on your tablet
- open TitaniumBackup on your tablet
- in file manager go to TitaniumBackup folder
- move the 3 whatsapp files taken from the phone and place them in the TB folder
- open TitaniumBackup and "restore" your whatsapp*

I had the Nebula V2 when on offer a few weeks back. I had to go back to the shop twice to return it as faulty!

First one had a four pixel wide line right across the screen of dead pixels.

Second one had a faulty power socket for the charger, so faulty that the charger wouldn't stay in!

Overall, i'm happy with what i've ended up with as I only wanted a cheaper alternative to an IPad type device but the quality is definitely represented in the price!
