Hi

I’ve just bought a NEC WGX2 TFT and it makes an annoying buzzing sound when turned on that seems to be coming from the back of the unit. It almost sounds like a fan.

I’m not sure if there’s something wrong with the unit or I’m being over sensitive as my pet hate is noisy PCs.

Any one else have the same problems???

Does it stop after a minute or 2? Coz ive got a Toshiba LCD telly which does that. Phones Toshiba and they said it was the backlight warming up. Could be the same thing. Best to phone to be sure.

The TFT is simply the best I have ever seen for gaming and normal use.

The noise does sound like its coming from an internal PSU. It sounds a bit like the PC power supply when its connected to the mains but the PC its self is switched off.

I'll give NEC a ring 2nite

Be careful if you're thinking of an RMA. I RMA'd the same screen for the same reason, only to receive what totalled up to 6 screens all with either dead pixels or backlight bleed. Also, they all produced the same buzzing sound from the PSU located at the rear. If the screen is good then I would keep it if I were you.

Ok, thanks. I rang NEC at lunch time and the guy I spoke to informed me there has been a problem with loud PSUs. But i don't think I can be bothered to RMA screen after screen to get rid of this problem!

I'm not really sure what to do now. Has anyone else got this screen with/without the buzzing sound?

Also, if anyone claims not to have this problem then try putting your ear to to back of the TFT (along the top edge) and see if you can hear anything???

I find it just loud enough to be annoying in a quiet room.

If the screen you have has no backlight bleed or dead pixels then the best thing to do would be to get it repaired - it's just not worth the risk of receiving one with backlight bleed or dead pixels imo. I had the PSU replaced in one of mine and it was much quieter when I got it back.

OK. I didn't realise you could get is repaired. The guy on the phone just suggested an RMA. Are the backlight and dead pixel problems really that common?

The lines are closed at the moment so i'll have to ring 2moro (didn't have the serial no at work). I can hear the buzzing right now as I type, I don't think I can live with it really!!!

Well from my experience it's very common. I have had 6 brand new screens and they've all had problems with backlight bleed and 4 had dead pixels. They were all brand new replacements from NEC themselves and I received a full refund from NEC in the end.

But yes, they can repair your screen quite easily simply by replacing the PSU. I would do that if I were you. The guy I used to deal with at NEC was called Scott - nice guy and very helpful.

What's NEC's policy on dead pixels, then? They seem pretty lenient.

Mines not bad at all really, The only buzzing I really get is if you use the USB hub on the monitor is buzzes after your system has shutdown. You need to use the rear switch to turn the power off on the monitor and its then fine.

Other than that I and most other people don't tend to put out ears around the back of the monitor ! ;) its for viewing mate ;)

Called NEC today and have arranged for a repair since the screen is perfect and I don't want to risk one coming back with dead pixels or any other nasty problems.

If this fails for any reason I'll get a refund from NEC.

I'm typing this on a 19" Dell, it just makes me realise just how good the NEC really is!!!!

PS Dells official line on dead pixels is >10 but I think if you kick up a fuss they'll replace it for you.

By the way; garethrobinson1, how did you go about getting a refund? Did they just refund the full amount you paid in store? Did you have to send off any proof of purchase?

I got mine second-hand from a well know online auction site but do have the original sales receipt. I’ll just have to say it’s a birthday present if I have any problems I guess.

The refund I was given is apparently very rarely given out. I'd just had such bad luck with the screens that it was the least they could do really. I provided them with the original receipt, which acted as a proof of purchase and the refund was given after I'd received what totalled 6 faulty screens.

If the noise is that annoying, just arrange for a repair with NEC and they'll replace the PSU, which is obviously the cause of the problem.
