NEC 24WMGX3 problems and warranty

My 24WMGX3 has developed the following issues:

1) Sometimes it just won't turn on and I have to keep pressing the power button (but not common enough to be easily repeatable).
2) The speakers now output a hum even when the volume is at 0%.
3) It now has some crazy temporary image retention that it never used to. If I spend 10 mins browsing the net and then start a movie I'll be able to see the outline of Firefox on certain colours for a good 20 minutes into the movie.
4) There is a 3-4mm wide vertical bar of darker pixels running the full height of the screen maybe three inches in from the left.
5) There are large patches/smudges of darker pixels running across the whole top inch of the screen.

#4 and #5 are my real problems that I want fixed but if I mention #3 I'm worried that everything will be brushed off as image retention (which they don't cover). Though I don't see how random smudges at the top can be image retention when the bottom of the screen has survived the start bar.

How would you guys proceed with this?

Try the screen on another machine to ensure it is actually the screen and not graphics card. Check cable connection to monitor is plugged in correctly, reset the monitor to factory settings. Try these things first.

KyleMac,

NEC have a policy of honouring warranties 3 years plus 3 months from the date of manufacture. However, there is no date of manufacture provided on the rear label, just a serial number. If you phone NEC with the serial number they can check the date of manufacture and let you know if it is still under warranty. There is some reassurance in that these specific monitors were introduced to the market in 2008 so it should automatically still be under warranty with NEC.

Out of interest, where and when did you buy the monitor? Some suppliers may accept responsibility for a warranty claim in the 1st year, however I am not sure about trading standards regulations so could be wrong on that. However, you have the reassurance of NEC and their customer service to fall back on in any case.

hmm I would say give them a call, they might be able to help you! You have nothing really to lose anyway.

See my post here, number should still work unless it's changed. I had broken USB ports on my old school NEC 20.1" WMGX2 (or w/e it was called) and they replaced it with the 24WMGX3 free of charge because the old one was EOL.

Really good customer service back when I used it anyway, and I think my screen was only just within the 3 year warranty period!

It's definitely the monitor and I bought it in Jan 2009 so I'm pretty sure it'll still be under warranty.

Here's a picture that clearly shows the vertical line and the worst spot of "smudges". It really shows up well on sky colours (the sky in any film) or deserty colours (Serious Sam) but my camera skills could only pick it up on a solid grey. The first time I noticed it was when Serious Sam HD came out (Nov 2009) but I just ignored it in the hopes that it would go away. If anything it has become more defined but it hasn't spread.

Just an update to say that NEC replaced it after sending them that crappy picture.

All round excellent support from NEC and only let down by TNT's "next day" which in fact took four days each way (four days to deliver replacement, four days to come and pick up the old one).

The replacement monitor arrived in a battered box but the plastic wrap inside said it was "buffer stock", so presumably they've kept a bunch back and no refurbs are being sent out.

The new monitor doesn't have the dark spot or the quick to occur image retention (none at all). It has two stuck subpixels compared to one stuck subpixel on the original, but I always have bad luck with pixels. The speakers didn't make a hiss originally but now do again, but I have a hunch that a charge just builds up when the monitor has been on for a few hours (why does this monitor have speakers anyway? Who would pay so much for it and all its connectivity and want to use those crappy speakers?).

When I was setting up the replacement I realised that I'd forgotten that this monitor has even more connections underneath! I'd been looking for a VGA to HDMI adapter when the monitor has DVI, VGA, and 3.5mm in and out underneath the whole time!

this is good to know as i have 2 of these. one of them is forever doing option (1) Sometimes it just won't turn on and I have to keep pressing the power button (but not common enough to be easily repeatable). can be a bit annoying. luckily i havnt had any of the other problems though.

I don't turn my monitor off. That's how I get by with it, so I just shut my PC down then turn the power off at the wall. It's fine if I do that.

About the issue, whereby the monitor wont turn on.

Next time this happens, try switching input by pressing the button , imediately after turning it on.

I have the same issue with my nec, doing the above solves it for me.

I cannot fault their customer support/after sales at all. I had three dead pixels sent them a pic and they sent me another monitor within days. unfortunately that monitor also had dead pixels.

They sent me another, all wrapped in polythene (basically a new one) and all is fine.

I have of late had the issue with the monitor not turning on when my pc does, but this only happens about every ten times, is there a fix for this?
