NEC button panel transplant

My monitor in sig is great, but the control panel (on/off button, +/_, select etc) is a bit shonky. I have read reviews where others have confirmed this. The on/off button can take a couple of hard presses before it registers. I notice most NEC monitors use the same cluster of buttons. I may be able to get hold of the same buttons from a damaged NEC monitor.

Does anybody know if a transplant is

a) possible?

b) easy?

c) has much chance of killing my monitor?

Chances are it is a small board connected via a 4/5 pin cable to the main board. I can't see it being massively difficult, and it shouldn't damage anything if the monitor is unplugged. You would have to use an exact match of OSD board as a slight difference could mean it would provide the same function.
May be better to look at it, and replace the actual buttons with better ones from a component retailer (soldering required).
