Hi, I've been holding off buying an NEC LCD20WGX2 for a couple of weeks because of the backlight bleed problems but they're a great price now and I'm very tempted. The new Dell 2007WFP looks good too and I was hoping for some advice on whether to get the NEC now or wait for the Dell? The monitor will be used mainly for gaming.

Cheers.

There are some early reports of the Dell 2007WFP response times, only PixPerPan though, but it should give you the good idea about the speed:

According to the Dell 2007WFP spec itself, it's definitely slower panel.

Not sure what you are expecting from the Dell 2007WFP, but if the gaming is your life you can't go wrong with NEC. Panel overdrive implementation is excellent and it's currently the fastest 20" WS panel around. Gaming sessions are really superb on this screen. Also, OCUK have this monitor on special deal this week and in my book it's currently tagged with the very good price. On the other hand, not sure what the price policy for the Dell 2007WFP will be, related to the recently developed situation that you will be able to buy this monitor only from Dell.

Only possible issue you may have with NEC is the reflective OptiClear panel coating, but according to the user comments in the NEC review thread it's definitely not alarming and it would give you much better picture, that's for sure.

Regarding the backlight problem, I would be more than happy to assure you that you don't have to worry about this one also ... but as it seems, currently is just the luck of the draw. Also, for many users screen cured itself after some period of time. At the end of the day, if the issue is so severe, you are covered by the NEC warranty and according to the user reports their support service is excellent.

Hope this helps.

Thanks igors, thats a great help. The only thing stopping me from ordering the NEC right now is that I'm slightly concerned that the glossy coating might be a bit of a problem as my computer is in a fairly well lit room with two windows - neither of which are directly behind me, more to the side of the monitor - but its a concern nonetheless. Do you think it would be a problem?

I suppose I could always turn the lights off and pull the curtains :D

It's definitely hard to tell until you place the monitor in such environment. This is the reason why it's troublesome for me to comment this on your behalf. As the usual guideline, direct and intensive light sources just in front of the screen are sometimes problematic (and could be problematic even with the AR coating screens as they are simply too bright in that environment anyway, as the reflection is just one bright & big white mark on the screen). As you have the natural lighting coming from the windows on the sides, I guess that it should be OK as they are not in the direct path to the monitor screen.

For example, I have a window just behind my back (and in front of the monitor screen). Even at the brightest day I can work on the monitor just fine & finish the job. Of course, when you play the dark games, dimmed ambient light is simply requirement ... for the total immersion ... and no problems for the light reflections anyway.
