Hi all

My missus is in the market for a 15" laptop so before she buys some junk because it's red/blue/white or what ever, can you all help me out?

She's not looking for anything ultra spec and she's not going to be playing games, just browsing, films, work etc. I suppose her budget will be £400 ish maybe more...

What i want is is very decent quality laptop, and i probably need putting right on a few things.... I always thought Sony are massivly overpriced and Dell slightly unreliable. I've always liked the look of Asus, MSI, Samsung but what are they like in reality? Also, what is acer like as a make? They seem to have poped up from noware?

I like the look of the MSI X600, sounds like a bargain but what of the CPU, seems very low spec to me? I've never had a laptop, i'm more of the power hungrey desktop gaming machine type person;)

Thanks in advance

TT

Acer? They've been around for years, used to be complete junk but have improved massively in recent years.

The HP G62 looks to be a pretty decent bet for circa £400-450, though it's maybe a little on the large side.
Comes with a quick i3 processor, 3gb ram, 320GB HDD and the usual built in Intel GPU, which will handle The Sims and such if required.

You could also pick up an Acer 5810T direct from them for £380, it's slower than the HP but also slimmer with a much longer battery life.

If you do go for the MSI I'd get a refurb X610 from the Argos clearance, £320 for the following spec:

AMD Athlon 64 NEO dual core processor.
2GB DDR2 RAM.
15.6in screen size.
Resolution 1366 x 768 pixels.
320GB SATA hard drive.
ATI RADEON HD4330 graphics.
512MB graphics memory.
Multi card reader.
3 USB ports.
HDMI.
1.3MP webcam.
802.11 b/g/n wireless enabled.
Windows 7 Premium operating system installed.

We do the brand new MSI X600 which has a better spec and is £399, but that is brand new, not a refurbished unit.
The spec is:-

Intel SU3500 1.40GHz processor.
4GB RAM.
15.6in screen size.
Resolution 1366 x 768 pixels.
500GB SATA hard drive.
ATI RADEON HD4330 graphics.
512MB graphics memory.
Multi card reader.
3 USB ports.
HDMI.
1.3MP webcam.
802.11 b/g/n wireless enabled.
Windows 7 Premium operating system installed
6 cell battery
2 year warranty.

That to me is worth an addition £60 as its new and a better spec on the memory and HDD.

Thanks for the replies, whats the deal with laptop cpu's? I meen, at what point is the 1.40GHz processor going to struggle with day to day stuff? I hear the I3 cpu's are pretty good, would it be worth trying to stretch the wallet to get at least a duel core? The rest of the spec is really nice on the MSI though

Thanks

I find the Atom and Celeron based laptops more than powerful enough for day to day stuff like web browsing, online chatting, MS office, browsing photos etc.

So I'd say the new Intel Single/Dual core CPU's are more than ample. I really don't see the point of I3/I5/I7 CPU's unless you can get them for very little extra or are doing some pretty CPU intensive stuff or gaming.
