need another 2 gig of pc3200 ram but it's ridiculously expensive is there any forward or backwards compatibility where i could save a few £££'s

if not i'm looking at £50 for 2gb of very outdated ram

Unfortunately DDR2 and DDR3 are not compatible with that board - so you will need to stick with DDR if you are going to upgrade that system. The motherboard seems to support up to PC-3200 as you say - so that is your best option with that system.

However, you may want to consider looking for how much you sell your current components for on a popular auction site, DDR RAM and s939 CPU/mobos go for a pretty penny. You could almost replace your current system with a AM3, Athlon II, 4GB DDR3 one and spend less money overall than buying the extra 2GB DDR.

it's crossed my mind a few times got some old socket A stuff on the bay at the moment try scrape a few pennies from it.

i just hit 2.5 Ghz on air with this system can't go any further as mobo is limited to a 250mhz FSB
