right guys going to build a new pc soon , i use it for the usual stuff plus fps games . i already have decided i will put a "q6600" cpu in it unless there is a better option and i am going to go the nvida route for graphics (may do sli) (8800 or 9600).

what i want to know is what motherboard is best , i normally use asus and was thinking of "p5k premium wifi-ap" or "p5k3 delux" but looking on this site a lot of people rave about "abit pro boards". i have never overclocked but would like to give it a go . which board would suite me best.

what cooler would work best for me on cpu.?

what ram to go for? will prob have 4gb

i also want a quiet powerful psu , which is best?

recommend a good case ?

i also may put sound card as i use comp as a music player or is this a waste of time?

which are the best hard drives to use ?

i already have xp as an operating system is it worthwhile upgrading and to what?

i have a budget of around £500-600 excluding monitor as that will come later.
any help appreciated.

First off, those two motherboards you've picked are Intel P35 chipsets so they don't support SLi. If you really wanted to go Nvidia SLi then you need to look at the Nvidia nforce 6 or 7 chipsets.

Secondly, why Nvidia? You could crossfire 2 x 4850s for around £40 more than 2 8800GTs and get much better performance. I'm presuming on your budget that you wouldn't be buying 2 cards straight away, so even a single 4870 might be an option for you.

I had a quick play and this is what I came up with, it's a tad over budget including delivery and I'm not going to pretend to be an expert so someone else can probably suggest something better for you:

Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7200S 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM - £16.44
2 x (to give 4GB total) OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) - £56.38
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775) - £17.61
Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £82.24
Antec Sonata III Piano Black Quiet Case - EarthWatts 500W PSU - £82.24
Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - £182.11
Samsung SpinPoint F1 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502IJ) - £46.99
Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 2.66GHz (1333FSB) - Retail - £105.74

Total (including Shipping + VAT): £602.61

Looking at this now, the system might be better balanced with a ATi 4850 and a Core2 Duo E8400 or Q6600, but at least I've given you a starting point.

P.S. You won't see all that RAM in XP 32 bit. You'll need a 64 bit OS.

Random DVDRW- 15
4gb of good memory - 70
cheap X38 mobo - 120
Tuniq Tower - 40
500gb F1 - 47
E8400 - 120
4850 - 120
+rest for the case+PSU.

Might be 30-40 outside a budget but you definitely will be happy with it, it will OC very nicely and allows you to buy 2nd cheap GPU later on when you need more power for 2x 16 crossfire.
