Hiya,

I am after a new WiFi router the problem I am having is this:

Since being upgraded to Virgin 20Meg service my old ZyXCEL P445 router cannot handle the full connection through the Firewall. Or with said another way with the Firewall enabled the CPU can only handle up to 10meg before going to 100% usage.

So I wanted to buy a new router and WiFi card for my newly acquired laptop (no wifi built in, when i say new I mean someone's cast off Compaq NX9005)

The Router must be capable of at least 20meg with firewall on, but great than that would be better to future proof any future upgrade. I have been looking at ZyXCEL stuff again

ZyWALL 2WG (25mbs) this is however a small business "solution" and costs a fair bit aswell, I have found it very hard to actually find ANY specs for throughput with firewall enabled, unless you are looking at Cisco gear, any ideas guys and girls?

tbh any modern firewall router should be capable of handling 20mb of traffic, as its not exactly uncommon to have 20mb connections thesedays.

I'd be looking at

Netgear WGT624 108Mbps Wireless Firewall Router

myself. do some searching for owners oppinions and see if anybody is having any problems. Failing that dont bother as tbh firewall routers are overkill

2 quick questions, have you got any ports forwarded on your router or have you set yourself free from NAT by setting yourself as the DMZ IP ?

if the answer to both of the above is "what ?" or "No" then you most certainly dont need a firewalled router.

I use the Netgear WNR854T..fantastic router with gigabit ethernet and ready for the next version of 802.11.
