Hi guys.

My gf is going on holiday soon, and she doesnt have a digital camera. So, thinking ahead, seeing as valentines and her birthday is coming up - I thought I would buy her a digital camera.

It needs to be as small and as compact as possible, really easy to use - I dont think she will be fiddling with any of the complex features etc etc. Should have a good battery life, and take cheap/easy to get hold of media.

Pricewise - approx 150 or perhaps a bit more

Been looking at the Sony T10 - could stretch to it, but is it really worth it - i.e. am I paying for the slick looks, and the name ?

Thanks in advance

Paying for 'the name' with Sony? I really don't understand how people still have the notion that Sony are actually good :p

Anyway, look at a Canon Ixus 65 :)

If you do a search, there are plenty of threads asking the same question, eg:

You might want to look at the Canon IXUS 60 or Canon PowerShot A630

Just out of curiosity, why do you say that?
I believe one reason is if you compare the range of products sold by Sony to Canon, for example. Sony sell CDs, Consoles, DVD players, TVs, Cameras, MP3 players, Movies, etc etc, Compared to Canon who sell Cameras, printers and other optical products. I'd personaly rather buy a camera off a company who's main area is imaging, like Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm etc :)

I believe there was also a problem with the CCD in a range of Sony cameras where it couldn't produce clear pictures, or didn't take pictures at all.

Also there have been a few other incidents involving Sony which haven't been too great for their reputation, such as the rootkit fiasco. :o Put me off ever buying their CDs again.

My suggestion would be the Fujifilm F series depending how much they are going for..

I've got a Fujifilm Finepix F10, alittle out dated now with the F11/F20/F30 but it is still a great camera in my opinion. It doesn't have a huge selection of options, but it can get any shot that I need. Seems like it would be a good choice if your girlfriend is not looking for something overly complicated.

Take a look

See I've never had anything but good experiences with SONY and my DSC-F717 is a simply stunning camera. The cameras CCD gave up after around 4 years and SONY fixed it free of charge, couldn't ask for more really.

As for SONY optics, they are using Carl Zeiss lenses on a large number of their point and shoot cameras, and there is nothing wrong with them. Their SONY/Minolta foray into the Prosumer DSLR market has been really good and bodes well for the future of SONY DLSRs (if currently a little pricey).

That aside - back to OP - I'm a real fan of the Canon Ixus family also and wouldn't hesitate to suggest them as a good option. For image quality I wouldn't be overly inclined to forget about Fuji either, a number of comparisons have produced some very nice low light results from them and the images nice bright and sharp.

If you are willing to stretch to a Sony T10 I might also consider the Fuji Finepix F30.

I like Sony products, but then, I base my opinion on each products merit. Some of the stuff they make I very much dislike, but you will get this with any company unless your completely brand loyal. The fact Sony make so many products I see as quite a good thing, and I can get a pretty good idea of how good another product is that they will release. Although their main area is not imaging, I don't really think this is an issue, as it's not as if you wouldn't buy a product from a company that has expertise in multiple areas.

I agree that the rootkit fiasco was without doubt damaging to their reputation, and an extremely bad move on there part. However, this doesn't have a lot to do with Camera's, and all too often people hear a few bad things about certain (unrelated) ranges of products, and the entire company gets slammed.

I own a H5, which, from the limited usage I've had so far seems to be an excellent camera. The H range is a highly praised set of camera's with many good reviews. I read into all of those reviews before buying the camera and based my opinion of the product alone on its merits, rather than other problems with other parts of the company.

Just my 2 pennies worth anyway. :)

The only Sony products I own that i'm happy with are my K800i (until it will inevitably break like my K750i did) and the sensor that I believe is Sony made inside my D70.

I don't knowingly own anything else made by Sony :p

Their phones, right? :p

Well, its her birthday on the 10th, so am still thinking about what to get her . . .

Narrowed it down to :

Sony T10
Sony W50
Canon Ixus 65
Nikon Coolpix

But still unsure. The Sony W50 looks like a great option. It's available online for about £130, and so i'll be able to get her some extra memory and a case etc etc within my budget.

You will find most girls are more interested in how the camera looks and if its compact enough to put into their handbags etc.

If your G.F is not bothered about performance issues, just get her a camera that looks good, very compact and performs decently.

Was looking at a few cameras, and by chance saw a Nikon Coolpix s7c cheap on the bay . . . . . got it for 150+13for p+p.

Its got a huge 3" screen, wi-fi :D , 3x zoom, 7.1megapixel etc etc.

Very good spec. Reviews are mixed, but its so cheap, that I'll try it out a bit, and if not am sure I can flog it on back on the bay, and get something else before the 10th - gf's birthday

I will do a mini-review as soon as it arrives.
