Need a car, desperately

Arite, sold my car in february as I went travelling for 4 months, it was on its arse before that though (Megane coupe) and I was using buses and whatnot to get around, didn't mind it that much at the time but after having waited for half an hour plus for the 3rd time in a row, then paying £4.10 for a ticket I've had enough so I'm getting a car.

I'm weighing up getting a credit card or something to pay for it, which would be around £1500 but if I could get something cheaper I'd make do with less than £500.

I just want something reliable, thats it, cheaper to run the better obviously, I've had a fast car before and thats out my system, really don't care about speed. I just want something that will get me from A to B without breaking.

I've looked on AutoTrader and there was a Polo for like 395 quid that had only done 68k miles, R reg or something, that sound like a good deal?

Any recommendations welcome (within reason), I've got 5 years no claims so insurance shouldn't be too bad.

Bring it on.

I think this would be the only time I would recommend the same as me - Micra K11 pre-facelift. Can get a tidy one for well under £500 and in reality they're
not THAT bad...

I was thinking about a Micra, they are awful but its just vanity that is.

Are they reliable yeah? I've just chucked good money after bad on cars so far and I'm sick of it, if I just spend under 500 on it (and not get a loan) then other than insurance and mot/tax I dont wanna spend any money on it all, for maybe a year and I can chuck it.

If its gonna break in a month and start needin new exhausts and gear boxes and whatnot I cant be doin with it.

Any car with that budget is abit like a lottery in reliabilty.

I had a 16 year old corsa when i started driving 109,000 miles on the clock and never had any issues with for a year till I replaced it.

yeah I suppose thats true but you can still maximise the odds can't you?

Do you think it would be better for me to get a credit card or loan and spend around 2k? I've never had a credit card before as they're evil so I have no credit rating.

Plus I'm on the rock and roll at the minute (just got back from travelling), I've got an application form in at a place my mate works that said I'll hear from them soon, but its not much is it.

If it was me, no job I wouldnt be buying a car. Its a big commitment especially with no income.

Get a job and then treat your self to a car you will like.

Don't focus on reliability, also something which is going to be cheap to fix.
At that price it will likely have problems.

I'd be looking at a nissan sunny, they're pretty reliable, scrappys are full of them for spares and the parts are damn cheap. Aside from that they're relatively easy to work on, cheap to insure and within budget.

You may not be able to get either due to your circumstances and lack of credit history but of the two, the loan should be a considerably lower interest rate. Who do you bank with? Go to their website and compare the APR on a card versus a loan.

Do you even need a car at the moment? I'd get a job, save a bit and then buy a car with the savings. Getting into debt whilst on the dole doesn't seem like a great idea to me unless the car is a necessity.

Few mates have bought old Fiestas as cheap run arounds, £500 and both have been in good nick and only cost them rubber and petrol. However, these were only short term runners, 5-6 months tops so couldn't comment on long-term life expectancy
