I'll reaffirm the V70 recommendation, I was in a similar position budget wise when I got my first D5, liked it so much that after a couple of years I changed it for my current one.Budget 2K ish
I was on a low budget, wanted something that would last and not let me down and can happily report neither has ever done so.
I'd get a pre 06 model if you go for a diesel as it has no DPF and would seek out a manual as old automatics in general in my experience are often a case of when not if they'll break.
And I certainly wouldn't worry too much about mileage, just be sure it's got proof of a recent timing and auxiliary belt change.
