Hey guys, I hope you are all well!

I have a bit of a silly question (Some of you might think so anyway). I'm struggling to understand how a motherboard takes RAM. For example, I am looking at buying the ROG Hero http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=5&subcat=2574. I have a few questions so I'll list them

1. I just want confirmation that the Haswell Motherboards (Z87) can only support dual channel RAM.

2. If I was to buy 2400MHZ RAM (Avexir for example) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=8&subcat=1387, would it fit straight into my board? What would I need to do in order to get it to work as I can see on the motherboard specs on the OCUK page, it shows O.C next to certain MHZ's which I believe means, "Can overclock to".

3. What does the O.C stand for in the MOBO Specs?

4. Is the listed MHZ for the RAM (In this case 2400MHZ) it's MAXIMUM speed? or is this it's stock speed which it's already set to?

5. Although this particular motherboard cannot take Quad channel RAM, is it able to take 2x Dual Channel RAM sticks if I needed 16gb for example, use 2x 2x4gb DUAL channel RAM sticks as per the link above?

Please help me guys! I'm trying to get my head around this as it's frying my own head's CPU

1) Haswell onboard memory controller operates in Dual channel mode. So to maximise performance you should use two or four sticks. Start with the Red slots on Hero.

2)Yes 2400mhz RAM would go straight in. Simply set XMP in the Bios and DRAM volts and your done. The RAMs stock speed is 2400mhz and is tested as such. On the web site it says OC next to 2400 on the motherboard tech sheet as this is an overclock for the Haswells memory controller. You should not worry though 2400 is easy for Haswell.

3) Explained above!!!
4) Explained above!! (2400 is stock for the RAM but OC for IMC on CPU)
5)Yes 2 or 4 sticks to maximize performance and keep the system operating in Dual channel.

OMG that is terrible mate. I could never be so arrogant ever!!! and so full of it too. The rest of his minions too!!! Thats how they responded to me like who are you to question Tom, almost abusive. I then just posted up some results and said ; this is who I am here are my results, which are not opinions they are results!!! go figure!!! = Banned!!!

You would think he was number one in the UK and top 5 world wide ;)

Its totally unacceptable to be honest from someone who is supposed to be helping end users get the best from there rigs and make informed choices.

They have never heard of efficiency you can tell!!! or benching!!

I am almost tempted to join again and wade in!!! I could wade in here is Ivy at 3.9 and at 6.5 where is the bottleneck in multi GPU?? or Haswell at 6.5 again where is the bottle neck.

Oh dear me.

Not much of a forum that tbh, seems more like the tom appreciation/*** licking emporium. Either that or Tom is god and his words are final.:D

For sure man^^ He should be saying Haswell approx 15% faster 01,05 and AM3, 10% 06 and Multi GPU 03 and Heaven 7%. 3D 11 Stronger GT's by around 3-5% and stronger GT's in FS and FS X by 3-5%.

The truth is he does not know as he does not test correctly.

5% stronger GT's in Vantage !!forgot one!!

What is very sad about that forum is the members don't seem to have minds of their own. If Tom carries on running it that way it is very unhealthy for the members. Where they don't debate and challenge him they don't really learn anything new. Some of the things that came up in the thread are very rellivent to gaming but they did not understand why, if you are going to build a gaming rig you want it to run on the best arcitechure available - it could mean a few extra fps in your favorite game. Also if gamers get into overclocking it gives them the chance to learn about their rigs and this in turn helps them fix things when problems crop up.

And the thing about that thread that really made me laugh is just because a Titan does not fit in with their way of doing things why does that have to apply to me or anyone else. Titans are very good at what they do and not everyone wants a GTX 780, Having said that though I do have my eye on the MSI GTX 780 lightning.:D

That thread's awful. Aside from the pointless rudeness, I really dislike this 'if Tom says it's bad, that's the final word and you're an idiot if you think anything else' attitude.

Thanks for your help 8 pack! Huge help to me! On a side note, that thread is terrible!! You can quite clearly tell Tom think's he's the king of the world or nobody is worth his time, that's appaling! I agree with you there Kaap, they all seem to be some sort of Overclock cult haha

Well, truthfully I've never ever ever even thought about Overclocking before but it's about time I give something a go! I'm sure I will come to understand all of the abreviations (XMP) in time, how do you know what voltage to set your RAM too? Is that just guess work without going crazy and literally exploding your RAM? haha just been reading some of the threads in the general chat, wow... Haha some funny stuff on there today!

@8 pack

You may find this an err interesting read

It was my first post on that forum

I hope they don't give all new members such a hard time.

Neil showed me that thread the other night, shocking but also comical watching all the sheep follow the shepherd.

He and his minions are under the impression everything he says is gospel, when in reality his knowledge is limited in most areas, especially clocking and watercooling. I'll never forget him slamming a case that could hold over 2000mm of radiator space because it couldn't do push pull on a 60mm thick rad :p

The XMP should set DRAM voltage for you. Use 1.65v for general use. You cant go wrong with that. At 2400mhz the odd other voltage may come into it too such as Cache, SA, IOA and IOD. I will help you with these no problem as and when you need them. They are basically the voltages controlling the onboard cache and memory controllers on the Hero board.
