Hi there I'm looking to get a 19" TFT within the next month or two.

Was hoping I could get some recommendations as I'm a bit of a newb TFT wise, I generally use my pc for gaming/movies and sometimes a little artwork(and am planning to connect an XBOX 360 to whatever monitor I get).

I need something that can do a good job of avoiding motion blur(I can see it
on some of my PSP games but have no idea what speed that screen runs at).

Oh and my limit will probably be £250-£300 max, but the cheaper the better ;)

Thanks in advance.

Hi kusari, and welcome to OCUK :)

This kind of question gets asked a lot. If you're looking for a £200 - 300 monitor mostly for gaming (and keeping budget down) then you can;'t really go wrong with models like the Samsung 913N, Neovo F419 and Hyundai L90D+ really. All very well priced, well established and excellent screens. For the budget, you are going to be looking at models based on TN Film panel technology. Might i suggest you have a read here as it should certainly help you out. plenty of info on that site :p

Basically, the TN Film models such as these offer very good responsiveness and so are well suited to gaming. Movie playback is not their strong point since viewing angles tend to be quite restrictive, but not really an issue if you're using the screen head on and on your own. There are a couple of other models which might offer some slightly better gaming performance, but movie playback takes a little more of a hit, and probably not worth it for your use. The 913N is one of the most popular models and very well priced. If you wanted to push the budget to more like £300 - 350 then there might be some other good options, but those i've suggested above would be good if you want to keep price to more ~ £200 :)

Many thanks for the reply.

Can I ask your opinion on the following:

Samsung SM-940BF
Viewsonic VX922
Hyundai ImageQuest Q90U
Samsung SM-970P

They are right at the limit of what I'll be able to afford but I guess if I'm going to get one I should get the best setup I possibly can.

The response times & contrast/brightness seem to look good on all of these, but any idea how they are for video playback?

I hate to say it but the Samsung SM-970P probably looks the best to me(Except for the response time, and I have an ancient grudge against Samsung as all the products I buy from them seem to break very quickly).

the Samsung 970P is in a different class to the others listed there since rather than being based on a TN Film panel, it uses Samsung's own PVA panel technology. This is certainly a more all rounded screen than the TN Film models. Viewing angles are much better than on TN Film models and the flexibility of the screen design is also very good. For movie playback however, the 970P sadly still suffers from the same issues as the TN Film models. Now, for use from a metre or so away it's not really an issue, but these models do show some unwanted noise in movie playback. The 970P would probably be the best bet thanks to it's wider viewing angles though, and as long as you aren;t watching movies from right up close, i don't think the noise would be an issue to you.

The VX922 and Q90U are two of the fastest panels in the whole market right now. A little faster than the 970P since PVA technology is fundamentally not as responsive as TN Film is. In fact, this comparison should help compare the 970P, Q90U and VX922 for you. If y ou need the absolute fastest panel for gaming then these would be a little better than the 970P, but the 970P is still a very responsive screen. Certainly many people find it perfectly fine for gaming and maybe you don;t need that extra fast response time that the 2ms and 3ms TN Film models can offer.Same situation with the Samsung 940BF, just a slightly updated version of the 930Bf which is covered in that comparison too :)
