now im going to be the first to say i can run a network ok
however i know next to nothing about wireless and how broadband actually works

ive recently moved back home for a few months and have noticed that the 'rents broadband is pretty terrible

they are on this free broadband from pipex [which is essentially tiscali]

they are on the end of the exhange [but i read in the stiky that this shouldnt matter]
the line is old as its in the middle of the countryside and bt says they should get a max speed of 1mbps

pretty lame

is there anything i can do to sort this out so they get at least 2mbps+

[feeling like an internet refugee]

------------------------------
this is a seperate but related issue

their wireless is shocking they have a netgear router [this one]

which should cover the entire house with ease
however my brothers laptop is suffering from very low connection strength as is my desktop
is it just that its an old house [maybe my uninformed misconception]
or would a better wireless reciever make boost the signal
[product suggestions or a course of action for this would help loads]

it cuts out every now and again which causes the router to have to be reset
its very frustrating when im trying to enjoy my laggy games of team fortress!

like i say any help or advice would be appreciated
TIA

i live quite a way out from the 'local' exchange, and i know people on standard adslmax connections in our village only get ~1 meg...i'm with be* which is adsl2+ and i get ~4 meg...so i'm not sure if that would be an option for you to get a bit more poke out of your line. i've got the same router as you and the wireless works very well...what version is it (1 through 4) and what version of firmware are you running on it?

im not sure how the router is configured as i never set it up

i will dl the latest firmware and give it a go tonight

what is this adsl2?
would that mean upgrading the line

how do you go about this?

You wont need to upgrade your line.
Go for BE 24meg - £18/ o2 16meg - £10. They both are companies with an excellent customer service.

afaik they have had intermittant service for years
i was looking at the BE packages
if i switched over to them would it really improve the speed?
i have seen 2meg connections but the service is 'up to 8meg'
i understand its never going to reach that if the line cant cope

here is the info on the exchange if it helps
