Need a folding bike

Hi,
I work in London, but travel from leafy Surrey. I need a bike to get me 2 miles from house to station, then from Waterloo to Paddington.

Can't believe I've been using the underground for so long but with the Olympics on the horizon I really need to do something now!

So - folding bikes. Would prefer to keep budget under £500 but will make exceptions!

An alternative strategy is get on Freecycle and ask around for a couple of adult bikes or pick some up cheap on Gumtree. Keep one locked up at each end. This is what I do

This is precisely what someone at work suggested today!
Thanks for all the tips guys. Think I should go with gears since the ride on the home end of the train journey is very hilly (and they are steep SOBs!).

Intetesting re stability when riding, I had wondered.

Contrary to the opening £500 budget, I'm not sure about the $$$ involved + the mrs will kill me if she discovers I paid that for a little bike!
