Need a good cpu cooler for £20-30

hey guys, i'm thinking of replacing my arctic 7 pro cooler as i bought it for temporary reasons so that i can buy a better one when i get paid this week.
It also seems that the cooler isn't quite keeping my cpu cool enough since i'm getting temps as high as 41C when idle and 50C on full load, and thats on stock settings.

I want to buy a cooler for around £20-30, not too hard too hard to fit, and doesn't require you to take out your motherboard so that you can attach the screws on the back.

I'm also thinking of buying a thermal paste and thought of buying this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=AC-000-AC&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=27 which i heard is very efficient.

So whats the most popular cpu coolers atm for around £20-30, any suggestions?

keep in mind that you'll need a 120mm fan with the Thermalright Ultra 120.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a 120mm fan that will act as a CPU fan. i.e. it will go up and down in speed according to the cpu temperature?
 
Tuniq tower is best what matters is overclocked load temperature
that graph is very misleading.Lets put the tuniq head to head with the thermalright say with a 6600 overclocked orthos load temp and see which is lower i guarantee the tuniq wins.I bet that's the tuniq on lowest fan setting too.
No idea where that graph is from but it's utter rubbish the zalman 9700 will not give you 36c idle let alone load it's a cooler for silence and performance not all out cooling ability i see far higher temps reported for the zalman9700 all over forums it was on my list of coolers to get. I'd trust what users say everytime not graphs off some website which may be
given incentives to give "certain company's products" good reviews.I will believe it if i see pics of the thermalright giving lower temps than a tuniq tower on orthos full load with tat naturally.Until then i believe what users say the tuniq tower is the best.Anandtech are foc just google around and you'll see what
a zalman 9700 is really like.Not having a dig at you i'm having a dig at that graph
and the tests they do it's clearly nonsense if people are reporting 40c-45c idle with the 9700 and stock c2d's.It's laughable the zalman 9700 is +2c off a tuniq roffles i almost wet myself laughing when i saw that graph.

Any 120mm fan should be fine as long as it has a 3pin connector that can go straight into the CPU connection on the Mobo. Then it is just up to settings in the BIOS as to whether the fan speeds up or not depending on temp.

I just got myself a UV reactive 120mm from a competitor and it works a treat on my Scythe Ninja.
 
ok i decided to buy the tuniq tower 120 and an arctic silver 5.
I'm not sure why i'm getting such a high temp considering that some have overclocked their e6600 up to 3.6ghz and only got temps as high as 40-45C, while mine idles at 40-41C idle in stock settings.

Will my new buy lower my temps?
 
Seems strange that they are that high idle on the stock cooler. Is there enough air flow in your case? The Tuniq will reduce the temperature significantly though.
 
ok i received my tuniq tower and arctic silver a few hours ago, i installed the cooler but i'm getting the same temps as i did with my previous cooler.

This is really starting to annoy me, i spent £50 on these two products just to find out i get the same temp as my previous cooler, and at times it even runs more hotter by 1-2C, according to cortemp, it goes upto 53C on full load.

I made sure this time i didn't add as much ass as i did previously, but it hasent made any difference.

I might have to auction this pile of junk and use my old cheap cooler :mad:

And the noctua kills the thermalright :cool: - and it has a decent fan that comes WITH the cooler, and has the option to mount 2 fans... That would be my 1st choice :D

Sounds like your getting poor contact between heatsink and processor I have the same problem, check to see if you have a concave heatspreader

or bad case airflow
 
i'm quite certain its not a bad contact between the cpu and heatsink, i tightened the screws so tightly that my finger has gone swollen up.
It might be the case thats causing a bad airflow, but then again when i leave the case cover open, the temp still stays the same for some strange reason.
 
Check the contact area on the bottom of the HSF and on the CPU IHS to see if there are any areas that aren't making proper contact.
 
Those above have mentioned performance :

Scythe Infinity, Thermalright extreme, Tuniq Tower etc

If you want silence, the Scythe Ninja is best performing with a low RPM fan, due to the lesser density of the fins, while still giving very good cooling.
 
checked everything, the hsf and cpu are all having a good contact.
Anyway, i've conculuded its my antec sonata case, time to buy a new case then.

Any suggestions on a nice black case for £50-90? :)
 
Could get an Akasa Zen for £29 ;) save yourself some buck too, has amazing airflow in there I have one myself, the build quality isn't amazing but its a decent case. By the way your sig is too big (needs to be 4 lines) just before a don sees :p
 
Never go by graphs thermaltake 120 owners let's see your orthos load temp
pics please. :D
 
you mean thermalright

i used one on my old barton and it worked a treat

had the underside base clamp thingy

problem was that once you took it off and put it back on it never worked as well


decent coolers but very fidgety and always messing about

i recommend em and i thnk thermalright offer the best cooling in the air colling range
