For the last few weeks my computer takes ages to load after the welcome screen. The desktop loads, but no icons appear for a couple of minutes... something is taking ages to load.. what is the best way of sorting this out safely?

Many thanks Magoo

Click Sart/Run and type msconfig select Diagnostic startup and then apply and reboot, this will make windows not load the normal start up item, all you need then do is run it again and turn on one item, reboot and repeat until you get the slowdown again, this should reveal the source, or try downloading and running microsoft bootvis.

i have this problem too sometimes...however i've tweaked my startup entries down to only those i really do need on bootup, but the problem still persists.
Heres my entries.

ATI Catalyst CLI.exe (i believe this is required for the CCC to run)
Razor Tray (this is my razor mouse tray icon)
Microsoft Activesync (probably what is causing the slowdowns but i need it for my PDA)
Microsoft Tweak UI (for various tweaks...mostly no startup passowrd)
Objectdock Launch
Creative Volume Tab
Microsoft Windows Defender

Get shut of that ATI thing (Can't you change your settings via display settings?) , Tweak UI (once you've changed a setting it shouldn't need to be memory resident). And Windows Defender will bog your system down substantially as it'll be scanning almost all your files in realtime....
