Need a GPU now but wish I could wait - EVGA step up question

Hi.

I've been waiting for my birthday (next week) to build a new rig.

I am coming from a laptop and my stepson's rig uses all my old stuff so I am at a standing start.

Having waited this long, I'm loathe to wait any longer but I know new graphics cards are looming.

Due to my ITX and FSX considerations I really want to go Nvidia this time but my budget is £260ish and although that puts me into 770 territory, the thought of dropping that cash on a 2gb card when the 280x has 3gb is not one that fills me with joy.

I could pinch my dad's 470 to put me on as he is gaming on his laptop these days but I was thinking about getting the EVGA 770 and stepping up after the 880 comes out if it's a viable option.

I know most of how it works but I'm unclear on what happens if something comes out that's say the equivalent of the 770 but smaller, cooler and with more VRAM (perhaps even for the same price or less than what I paid).

What would happen then?

Also I know this probably gets mentioned somewhere but could I switch from amd to nvidia or vice versa?

I could get a 750ti then sell it later but don't see that as the best option.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks.

Ok I should have given more info but I'm still trying to avoid bring stuck with something when the new gear comes out.

I'm doing an SG05 build (450wpsu) with a 4790k. With a dremel you can make 10.5 inches of room.

I'm still undecided about the merits of overclocking a 4790k, especially as I'll need to buy a cooler so I'll be running stock for a few months and would like to keep temps sensible.

I intended to buy whatever fitted and was the best value out of the 770 or 280x.

Thanks for your help.

I think the 770 is best too as I could use it for a year and then upgrade whereas I know the 750 will have me itching to step up and I might end up spending more than I wanted.

Being lazy/careful now, could I ask you to find me the cheapest evga 770 that OC sell that is 10.5" or less and eligible for step up?

Thanks a lot.

How much space have you got in inches?

As for too hot, it's a lot cooler and quieter than most out there.

What power supply have you got?

Finally, which 770/280X cards were you considering?

Thanks for this. I was under the impression one of these would be too much for my intended build.

Now the PCS 290 offer is on and it just happens to be the only one that will fit.

I've got a decision to make now.
