Well, two years ago I knew what was good, what was bad etc and I built myself a lovely system. An upgrade is in order now, but it has to be a laptop as I'm moving to China.

I have about £600ish, but I could stretch that to £700.

So, what's hot and what's not these days? I've always stuck by AMD but it appears Intel rule the laptop market. Also, I've noticed Intel have several 64bit processors. Is a dual core processor the future?

Another thing (sorry), are Laptops easily upgradeable? I've heard they can be a bitch.

I don't play many games so full-res AWESOMENESS isn't required, I'm happy playing at a medium/low resolution. I love to play music, watch movies and I also use Photoshop and Dreamweaver for web/graphic development.

What do you suggest?

Cheers,

Phil.

Might you find it better to buy a laptop once you are over there??

Getting one here and then transporting it could be a pain?? Plus different power req's over there perhaps?

And also, upgrading a laptop... hmmm... They generally arent as modular and as easily upgraded as a base unit. I wouldn't be buying one thinking thta you'd be able to upgrade and stay up to date. The easiest upgrade by far for a laptop is to buy a new one (unless its easy stuff like adding memory or a bigger HDD).

Laptops are one of the few things that aren't any cheaper in China, unfortunately. There isn't a problem with UK to China power requirements, either.

Yeh, I was thinking of buying a laptop with 512MB of RAM and then upgrading to 1024MB, simply because there is more choice at the 512MB end of things, for my price range.

Nice blog - I'm off to Oz soon, must shift my lazy butt and get a proper blog going about it... I've only bunged a few worthless comments on the MSN one at the mo. I'm too involved with uni...

Good luck! :)

Thing is, they seem to be the best value for money and with that, I expect some areas of the business to be shockingly poor. I guess it's a risk though as I've searched and read a few threads and it's 50/50 for excellent/poor.

Apparently, Acer have excellent support in China, so any problems would be sorted quickly. I'll keep looking though.

How about the

Dell Inspiron 640m Intel Core Duo T2250 - XP Professional (N076M1) (LT-011-DE)

I own the previous model the 630m and chuffed to bits with it plenty fast enough (Once rebuilt without all the Dell stuff) even plays some games if the detail is turned down.

Has a 14.1 widescreen which is big enough and keeps the laptop size down.

Plus the battery life is amazing own both 6 and 9 cell don't need the larger one.
