So I've never really played any of the games across the years that are considered to be 'must-plays', I've forgotten about the majority of the games I played on the PS1/2 since I was only a kid when I played them but ever since I got an Xbox it had always been Gears of War and then CoD, and I never really was able to get a hand of some of the best games, or even play any classics from older generations; so I've decided I need to make a list and I need your help as to what games I need to play on any previous platform.
So far I've got:
Mass Effect (all 3)
Zelda
Resident Evil
Deus Ex
Fallout
Elder Scrolls
Half Life
BioShock

and that's about it so far...

Personally I wouldn't bother with lists, or trying to buy loads of games. Pick a type of game your interested in, buy any of the top rated games for that type, play.... rinse repeat.

Imo many of these suggestions are too nostalgia struck and someone new to them just would not enjoy em.

That said to echo the ones already mentioned and add some myself without too much nostalgic bias I'd still suggest;

Zelda (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess (Wii version))
Final Fantasy X
Mass Effect 1 + 2
DotA 2
Yeah I kinda thought that I wouldn't enjoy some of the older ones but I do really like RPG games and there's a really long list of those that I haven't even played. The only older ones I'm actually really bothered about playing is Zelda and a couple of the Final Fantasy games.

The Mass Effect series is superb but not ideal for a new gamer or someone catching up, they could be quite tiresome to work through and you'd get bored. I played them between other games.

I would play Bioshock Infinite first, Dishonored, then possibly both Portals. If they don't get you hooked, nothing will.

I'm going to be playing the games one at a time, not all the time either, just like couple-hour sessions maybe and some extended sessions. I start college soon so I have a lot of free time which will be more than enough. MMORPG's/standard RPG's are my favourite games atm so I think that I'm just going to stick to getting the top rates of those games like Skyrim, Mass Effect, Fallout etc

First game I've downloaded is Final Fantasy VII. How long roughly is the playthrough for it? I've heard the FF games are quite long.

Something different from the hoards of of rpgs and fps

Supreme Commander 2
Euro Truck Simulator 2
Broken Sword series

Played Euro Truck Simulator 2, loved it but got bored of it eventually and drifted away from it. Are there any more recent updates? It must have been a good year since I played it

If we're talking classics then I'm surprised the first three Spyro games and Worms armageddon haven't been mentioned. They were amazing back in the day

Yeah I remembered playing the Spyro games and even Worms as a kid, they were amazing. Will have to get them.
I think the majority of the games I'm gonna be playing I wont be actually completing, just playing them for a few hours to at least say I gained experience playing them. Definitely going to play some more FFVII though, played an hour so far and I'm hooked already.
