i just got rid of my avast anti virus so i can install comodo security , went to install comodo , however...i got a "Error 1603" message , went and had a look on google and from what i saw i have to go into safe mode by pressing F8 and use the avast removal tool, downloaded that....but...the pc is not going into safe mode it comes up with the boot options screen to select a boot device....so im a bit lost as what to do next ?

thanx :)

Sound like the start up file have been corrupted .. Can you boot into windows (non-safe mode)?

Insert the windows instillation disk, and try the recovery options when promoted, then select repair.

Follow the normal install steps until you get to the install screen (big install button). Instead of clicking on install, select "repair you computer" (just near bottom of same screen). This will prompt a list of recovery options. Select "startup repair" when prompted.

As long as it's a windows 7 disk, it makes no difference. I use one disk for all my repairs and installations :)

ok got into safe mode ( by turning the pc off via the on / off button on the case ) .....but still unable to install comodo...again error 1603

EDIT: it seems ok now ...installed comodo and it seems fine :)

Good stuff, as a precaution..

Run Ccleaner with everything tikced except "wipe disk"

The same utility, run the registry cleaner.

lastly, when you out for a few hours, run the check disk utility.. Simply cluck on start. Computer, right click on C: drive, then properties. Select tool tab then under that click on "check now" under error checking. Tick both boxes, then ok, then restart. May take a few hours.

This will verify your HDD sectors are ok and system files are intact. :)
