Need a little help with software compatibility

Ok Folks

There is a couple of software I got that can only be run on Windows and as you will know I got a MBP 2006 model.

What would you do get Windows 7 and boot camp it?

Or is there another way round it... But I believe if I use the other software that let me use windows within Mac OS I would still need to purchase Windows 7 Wont I
 
It depends on the apps you need to run, if they don't require direct access to the GPU (mainly games) or lots of processing power and you have plenty of RAM then you could run Windows Virtualized using something like Virtualbox (free), Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion. You could consider running XP which is cheap and doesn't need much in the way of resources.

Another option (again depending on which apps you plan to run) could be using something like CodeWeaver. I'm not too experienced with these however they list compatible apps on their websites.

I use Virtualbox running either XP or Windows 7 for Windows only apps.
 
OSX is a fantastic virtualisation platform.

As the above post mentions, it really does depend on what you want to do. Gaming, or if you have smallish amounts of RAM, and you're willing to reboot then Bootcamp is great.

Personally I don't game very much (I have an Xbox, PS3, Wii, PSP and DS for that :confused:) so I don't often reboot into Bootcamp.

I do however run Windows all day every day - using either Parallels or Fusion. For what it's worth I find Parallels is better at desktop Operating Systems such as WinXP/Win7 whereas Fusion is better at scaling for multiple server OS'. I can get more guests on Fusion than I can Parallels.

You'll still need a Windows license though to cover the OS you want to run.

I'd avoid the Crossover app though unless the application you want to use in Windows is directly supported by Crossover. It's not really a general use virtualisation platform.

Also, maybe check out VirtualBox - that has the benefit of being free, what's not to love about that?
 
Ok Folks,

The only thing I want to be able to work to be honest is the software that bundles with my Sony HDR TG7 Camcorder that the only thing I want to be able to use as it require windows. I wont be using anything else as everything else i use I can work on my Mac... Just need to see if crossover will work if not then I dont think shelling out money is my ideal

Are you sure of that? Surley if it has FireWire it will connect just fine and if it USB like some Canon camcorders it should show up as a Mass Storage Device and you can copy the video off that way.

It's mentioned on Mac forums on the Internet so I should assume it is OS X compatible.
 
I can get the camcorder to connect to my Macbook pro no problem at all but i cant use the software that came with it to view my videos and use GPS Tracker etc that only works on windows.

Why would you need to use the viedo viewer that only runs on Windows? Can you not view your videos in OSX (and if not have you got Perian installed?)

As for GeoTagging I've just looked and the Sony uses some stupid format. :(
 
Seem like you know a lot mate would you kindly help me on advising how you would do all this.. What the best way of getting GeoTagging to work wont it work with iPhoto 09?

I cant use the camcorder till xmas day the other half wrapped it and stuck it under the tree....

I tried my friend camcorder the other day who got the same as what I got but he use PC so he no trouble. I am a Proud Mac user so been trying work things out ready

My plan was if not going to use the bundle software is to use iMovie 08 which I have got to do the video side of things. But for Geotagging is where I am stuck

That's the problem. From what I can see the GeoTagging in that Sony is proprietry.

You could import them into iPhoto and manually add the GPS data (this is what I do as I don't have a geo compatible camera well apart from my iPhone)
 
So is there different ways for Geotagging to work? Wont iPhoto pick up the GeoTagging information from the sony camcorder at all? Where are you reading this information about Sony GeoTagging as I am trying to work out what I can do

There are plenty of ways of doing photos and iMovie can read geo information just not from your Sony as they are being stupid and using a special format.

As I said you can still add the information from iPhoto manually as long as you know where the photos/videos have been taken.
