Hi all,

After recent computer related work (3D modelling and animation) my computer is lagging terribly!

Using atleast 70% memmory when i am doing my work and just constant lag is not enjoyable :(

So i am wanting some advice on what to do, my spec is below:

Mobo: XFX 780i
CPU: Intel Q9550 skt775
CPU Cooler: Xigmatec something or other (2years old was £35 when i got it)
RAM: OCZ gold 4gig DDR2 800mhz
HDD: Samsung spinpoint F3 500gig

So far i was looking at getting:

2 or 4 more gig of RAM
new cpu cooler (maybe H70) -- What would you reccomend ?
1tb samsung spinpoint HDD

Now the problem is i am wanting to overclock my cpu as i know it can perform well but my mobo is a bit crappy for doing this :(

So would i be better buying a new skt 775 mobo with better overclocking capabilities?

Then i question myself... should i just sell the cpu, mobo and RAM i have and go I7? Or is it going to be rather expensive compared to just buying more ram and better cooler n new HDD?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Probably not worth upgrading the motherboard. Also an SSD will make more difference to performance than a better HDD.

Lots of fast cores, and plenty of RAM is what you need for animation and rendering. Best thing would be a sandy bridge i7 build. A 6 core AMD build would also be good, or if money is tight throw more RAM at what you have now.

Are you on windows 64bit? If not then adding ram will make no difference as you will not be able to use it.
What temp are you running at? That will tell you if you need to upgrade to cooler.
Have you tryed overclocking?

as doughnut says. use core temp to check your temps maybe you can clock it further. an ssd is the way to go really much faster than hdd. extra ram if you have 64 bit windows.

Hi guys,

i have 64bit windows

cup temps at idle are@

36
30
41
41

when maxed out i am getting mid 60's, i have cleaned it and reseating it properly a number of times in the past and still same results.

its animating and rendering i do most and so i know processing and RAM is important but at the moment can't justify the price for an I7 950 as from tests, its not hardly any faster for what i do, if i got I7 950 i save 2 secconds per frame rendering and as i am not in the business of animation at the moment its not an affordable thing unless my current system can bring me enough funds to vouch for it....

so is my selling my system i have and buying a new of value or would it be cheaper to get new ram, cooler, ssd and possibility of a new mobo if it means astonishingly better overclocking?

i have overclocked before hence my signiture but didn't keep it at that due to fears of temps and instability :/

thanks
