Hi Guys/Gals,

I have a fairly old machine now (with some updated bits). I purchased the bulk of it in 2007, exactly 4 years ago now (made it in the April).

My current spec (feel free to laugh):

Intel C2D E4300 @ Stock (w/ Arctic Cooler 7 Pro)
Gigabyte P965 DS3 v3.3
4GB GeiL DDR-II RAM
ATi 4850 512MB
HDDs - 1TB Samsung, 500 Western Digital and Seagate 500GB - All SATA-II
OCZ StealthXStream 500w PSU
DVD-RW Drive (SATA)
Xigmatek Utgard

It's been good to me over the years (upgraded from 8800GTS to 4850, 2GB to 4GB, various hard drive additions, mainly for more space and also the case [from a Lian-Li PC-7+]). It does run all the Source games, including Portal 2 etc. But over the last 2 years, I've noticed that is struggles on anything new e.g. Crysis etc (which is obvious).

Now, on to the nitty gritty. I would like people in the current hardware loop to spec me a machine. I start my new job soon, so I will getting a monthly (I think) wage and I would love a new rig.

I want it to be on the Sandybridge Platform, as it looks the best for bang for buck, although if X58 is affordable, I'll give that a shot.
I love the look of the P67 Sabertooth and how it performs. Also, I want a decent graphics card that can handle most games (@ 1680 x 1050). A SATA-III SSD would also be awesome.

The parts I'd like to keep and utilise in this potential build are: the case, the hard drives (the 1TB one), DVD-Drive and maybe PSU (not sure the outputs, and if I still got them. The mother chucked loads of stuff out in a Spring clean earlier this year.. women!)

Thanks,

Jake

Not sure what your budget is but this is a top of the range sandybridge gaming spec (including the sabertooth :) lol):

Asus P67 Sabertooth Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** £164.99

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor with FREE Operation Flashpoint Red River Game £161.99

OCZ Vertex 60GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (OCZSSD2-1VTX60G) £71.99

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £41.99

Corsair A50 High-Performance CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £27.98

That looks a really good spec. My budget is around the £700 mark, so that would be good. I wanna hold out for some SATA-III SSD's though, as the performance is huge!

Well, atleast a months time. I know there may be some better hardware out then, but I've been out of the loop for sometime and I want to get an idea of decent hardware etc.

Yeah well at the moment it's all about the 2500k with a P67 board, but Z68 boards are coming out in a couple of weeks and then there's rumours of AMD planning to launch bulldozer in the week of 20th June so it may be worth hanging around till then as Intel may drop their prices to keep the competition high. One can only hope anyway :D

Another alternative if you don't want to do a full rebuild is to sell your current processor and graphics and replace it with a Q6600 & GPU of your choice. Q6600 would be covered by the selling of your gpu & cpu, only outlay would be your graphics card. You'll need to oc the cpu though, 3Ghz is child's play on that motherboard.
