Need a MMO

If you're looking for something that's not WoW in different clothes :

Age of Conan : same basic hub based questing stuff, but much better combat, lots of atmosphere and no bloody elves. Taking elves out of a games makes it loads better.

DDO : all instanced, but very deep class mix 'n match system and a pleasantly different world setting. Combat is very good too. It has elves, but also warforged, which kind of balances it out.

Global Agenda : Mostly instanced again, but really good combat, interesting classes and jetpacks. Jetpacks make any game a bazillion times better. It also has no elves.

A very good & valid point on the Elves. I'm playing World of Tanks to pass the time at the moment. No elves in that thank christ.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I've had a look around and games like GW2 or AoC are looking pretty good. I suppose I could start playing some mmo short term to get me through for GW2/SWTOR or maybe even Planetside 2, but I've yet to decide

if you really want to get away from Sorcery etc then you can't really go wrong with City of heroes. it'sgot a trial but you're very limited and will be going to a dual FTP and Pay mode in a few months time.

No-ones mentioned it yet i don't think, but Star Trek on-line is getting some kind words again at the moment. A major new content update just redid all the ground combat to make it, well.. fun?. Also graphical upgrades and lots of all round tweaks i think.

I got suckered in to buying a lifetime sub on it (i know...) so reinstalled it yesterday and was quite impressed. Lots of people around on the stations, auction house choka.

Might be worth a look?

I predict GW2 will end up a bit like Rift is now. People will love it for a few months but then the novelty will wear off and it'll be "just another fantasy mmo thats a bit like WoW".

Ironically thats nailed on the head one of my concerns about SWTOR, that people will love it for a few months but then the novelty will wear off and it'll be just another scifi mmo thats a bit like WoW. Now if only they had taken the SWG route it most certainly wouldnt be like WoW, but thats a whole different discussion.

I think it has enough features to set it apart from WoW, unlike SWTOR/Rift.

Yes from what I've read so far it does seem to me that gw2 has less similar mechanics to wow than sw:tor which seems to have quite a few similar mechanics to wow. Both games should be successes. Though perhaps given the budget and the licence and the dev house involved there is more pressure on sw:tor to succeed.
