i built my new pc 2 days ago (pics coming sometime soon)

and it will not remember the date / time after it has been unplugged from the wall. do i need to leave it plugged in sometime for charge? or should i go buy a new one?

The motherboard battery is a non-rechargable one. Not remembering the date/time normally means the battery has died after several years of use, replacing it is then an easy fix. 2032 or something like that. It's weird that it's happening with a new computer, may indicate a motherboard fault instead. New battery is cheaper than postage back for rma.

Good luck

The date/time is stored in the CMOS which is powered with a CR2032 battery. Check yours is installed correctly and if it keeps happening then just replace it as they are only a couple of quid :)

Forgot to mention - if you change the battery and it resolves the problem only for a short time before the issue returns then you have a dodgy board. I had an old Foxconn one do that many moons ago.

The battery is only used when you unplug or switch the wall socket off (or during power cut). If the PC is simply left in standby (using about a watt of power), the PSU supplies enough standby power to maintain the clock/cmos settings.

So leaving the computer plugged in extends the battery life, but it doesnt recharge it :)

Some do. It's useful for boot on usb and charging mobile phones. I think the voltage will vanish if you switch it off at the psu.
