Hi guys,

Getting close to taking my test, at last! Hopefully i'll pass in time to catch the rest of summer, anyway, I'm starting to look at some new cars. I need to find something which isnt too expensive to insure and obviously something i cant kill myself in (Well not so easily anyway). My Mum and Dad have said they'll contribute to help me get the one i want.

I quite like the new Punto and the new Clio, although i'd really love to get a StreetKa (Sad i know) but i have no idea how much they cost to insure, Can anyone help me or give me some more ideas plaese? I really know nothing about cars and whats reliable and what isnt, so i'd really appreciate any advice.

Seems to me like you are looking at spending WAY too much money on your frist car. What exactly is your budget here?

Golden rule: Don't buy brand new.

As for a new driver I would be looking at a older model of the Clio, Punto etc.

No need to spend anywhere near £10k, spend far less. Especially if you only want a run of the mill hatchback - you can get decent enough ones for thousands less.

You mean in case i have an accident?

No, every one scrapes and dent's their first car, and after spending 10k and doing "learner" type mistakes (example not knowing the car width properly, we've all done it) you will find the mistakes will cost you a lot less on a 2k Fiesta / Clio e.t.c than a brand new car.

OK for all that is good and dear in this world i pray to you that you don't spend 10 grand on a first car. I guarantee that you will damage it in your first 2 years of driving it. Just get a first car worth around 4k now (that should sort you out a pretty damn nice car for a first car) better than most ** friends too :D. Get a 03-04 clio 1.4 16v with about 30,000 on the clock. Then after a couple of years get a nice nice car, sounds like you aren't short of a few bob :P.

Plus, the insurance on a 10k car for a 17 year old (i assume ** 17) will be about.....er....20 billion pounds. I even think most insurance companies may not insure you.

EDIT: Everyone has scrapes in their car and they are totally stupid, how much they cost. I had one in my car a month ago after driving for 9 months and it was a tiny scrape yet it's going to cost around 400 quid to fix.

Yeah i suppose your right, i'm probably getting a bit too excited about starting to drive, i want my dream car straight away. What would you recoment for a decent 1st car then? I mean in terms of miles and stuff? (and one thats not butt ugly!) ;)

Each to their own in terms of uglyness ! Every one wants their dream car straight away, but it's a case of learning to crawl before you can walk type of thing.

Even though I will get flamed for saying this: Clio / 206 / Fiesta / KA. All will do for a year or two of driving.

Mileage isn't overly important on the decent make of car's. Personally i'd look for a Toyota Yaris as a first car, I think you might like the looks of them too, as well as comfortable and decent tools.

My first (and current) car is a Fiesta Zetec-S. You can pick up a decent one for about £4k now (52 plate, <30,000 miles)

The insurance may be a little expensive if you are 17 though.

Oh and it is a MUCH better drive than the StreetKa

I'd take the advice of the people above me and buy second hand and keep the price as low as possible as the insurance is going to sting for a while, so i'd budget a grand or so for insurance, and if you have to make an insurance claim you can expect next years insurance to go skywards.

Also with first cars, within a year or so you will be bored of the car/lack of power and will want to upgrade......me knows this i'm only 26 and looking to get my 4th car.

Anyway, all the best with the test let us know what car you decide to get.

Nothing lame about it ! It's just good when you finally get around to it, a really certain sense of freedom happens.

Don't think i'm a dad like character either (thats Fox) i'm only 22 my self :P

Yeah the old Zetec-S are cool cars. People like them. But i still think a 1.4 clio is quite funky still.
