Need a new car

I have a budget of 8k. I was on the verge of buying a Mondeo ST220 due to the speed, style, comfort and size of it, but I had to be realistic that the fuel consumption would eat my luxury spend each month!

I have no idea what I'd like now and I have 8k floating about, waiting to be spent!

I do like the idea of having something big and comfortable (regular journeys from Buckinghamshire to Inverness throughout the year), but I also want something that looks stylish and can move.

Can anyone recommend from previous experiences?

P.S. I am a big fan of Golf's and Leon's - I'm not ruling these out, but I don't like the idea of having a car (golf) which everyone else has!

How many miles a year do you do?

Excluding the Scotland journeys, which have just started this year, around 10k.

You'll no doubt get a few Mondeo recommendations, but if you aren't doing mega mileage over the year what about something like a Lexus IS220? You'd get a pretty decent one for £8000 - used to own one a year or two ago and loved it - not immensely fast by any means, but very comfortable and a fantastic engine note, nice at cruising speeds too.

To be honest the ST220 isnt going to cost you THAT much more in fuel than something more boring, and virtually nothing more than something vaguely interesting.
