... Reason being I wasn't even planning on getting one till yesterday when my Pro evo 2008 arrived and wouldn't let me play on high setting!

My spec is:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 2.21ghz, 1 gig of ram. Ok this may not be top notch but I know the weak link is my gfx card which is a rubbish x700 at present. I was looking, or people were reccomending either the 8600gt from Nvidia or the radeon x1950 pro, any advice on which is the better card, or if their is a better card available (for my budget). I also heard that the 8800gt might be coming down in price, possibly to roughly £100 any truth in this? I'm looking for pci express btw!

Thanks in advance for replies!

x1950 pro is a good choice at that price, or if you go down the used route then 7900GTX / X1900XTX would be good choices. You may get a 8800GTS 320Mb for £100 2nd hand in a day or two

Wait for a week or so as above stated you may find the 8800 gts for as low as 100 or maybe just above if you want a new card then 1950 pro is the best of the 2 cards you mentioned.

oh is the 8800 only going to be around 100 second hand? I would rather have a new card!

I don't really know anything about graphics cards but the 8600 supports pixel shader 4.0 and the x1950 only 3.0, the game i want to play only requires 3.0 but surely for the future to have pixel shader 4.0 is going to be better?!

You would rather have a brand new much slower card than a 2nd hand card that is miles faster?

 Suite yourself but the x1950pro as of now is the best card in this price range, the 8800gts might come close, only time will tell.

The new 8800GT 256Mb are going to be £100ish. Much quicker than any of the cards you are looking at but don;t know how much the 256Mb might affect games in the future.

The GPU is powered by a single 6pin PCI-E power connector which is the same across the whole x1950 range.

I'm really not technical so how do i know/find out if my pc has a 6 pin connector?
