Sorry to invade your thread here but I'm after similar advice.

I'm willing to spend a bit more (150+) but it also needs to be AGP. I'm after some opinions too though. Is it really worth purchasing an AGP card when everything is progressing into PCI-E? I'd like a total upgrade but I can't afford the 800+ I'd need for the system I'd like so in the mean time I'd like a boost in the graphics department. I have a similar spec to the OP but only 1g of RAM (i'll probably buy another Gig around crimbo though). Thanks in advance for any opinions/suggestions :)

Wouldnt go for an x1600 series card, they have a 128 bit mem interface that cripples performance. If I were you (both) I'd consider a change of motherboard - sell your old one on an auction site - allowing you to go PCI-E. The change of board might cost you £30, but AGP graphics cards cost a lot more than there equivalent PCI'E ones. If I were you I'd change motherboard and buy an ocuk 7900GS

that one looks good, ive read a lot of threads on these mobo's. can anyone who has had one or have had experiance with these bords please say as i do want to make sure what i get is'nt alode of rubbish.

The Asus is pretty pricey and unless you're going SLi it's not really worth it. I'd highly recommend the DFI ultra-d, fantastic board, great for overclocking. Probably the best 939 board around. You might be able to cash in on the conroe craze by picking one up cheaply second hand.
