I need to upgrade my ancient gaming machine, looking at new cases I can't fathom where you would fit an optical drive on the front and and unlike my current tower case all the new ones don't have USB sockets, headphone socket etc along the bottom of the front but appear to be on top along with the power button?

Optical drives are old tech; get yourself an external USB drive. And IO ports and buttons along the top are good.

USB sockets along the top leaves you with cables dangling down though but seemingly there is no other option so I'll have to get used to it,
I've got loads of stuff stored on DVD disks that I'll have to transfer to USB drives using my current PC then.

I'm in my 70's and although I built my current gaming PC a few years ago I'm looking at buying a ready built gaming rig but the cases are mostly done up like a Xmas tree with LED lighting but again it seems I have little choice it seems.

The Fractal Pop series have two 5.25" bays hidden behind a cover if you want to carry over an existing optical drive.

In terms of front IO and dangling cables - try and get in the habit of using the rear IO for any permanently connected devices and only using the front IO for temporarily connecting devices like a USB drive etc.
