I'm replacing my Virgin connection with a BT one but want to get a generic email address.. I've had a hotmail acocunt for years but never use it due to all of the spam it receives.. can anyone reccoment any others?

is Gmail actually any good? as this is probably my first option..

It's very good actually. I've never been a fan of webmail but find myself using it as my primary email address now. Spam filter is very good, very reliable, nice interface, very fast mail delievery. Can't fault it really

:) Seconded.

i get no spam with my hotmail one these days whereas my gmail one is crammed full of crap

had a gmail account for about 4 years, not a single spam message, always been able to login, never had to wait more than a couple of seconds for a page to load. only thing i can think of which comes even close to that reliability is my trusty hammer (for fixing PC's)

Google Mail is brilliant. I only use hotmail for MSN.

gMail is really good for filtering out the spam and all of the rubbish that no one ever wants, reads and hates trying to delete!

So that is another vote for gMail, I have recommended it to all of my clients due to the excellent service it provides.

You can use your Gmail address or indeed *any* email address to set up a Microsoft Passport account to use with MSN. Granted you'll have to get everyone on your contact list to re-add you, but once this one time effort is over you have the simplicity of one email address for MSN and email. Overall I think it's much less confusing for your contacts remembering you have a different email address to the one you use for MSN.

And to answer the original question i've been so impressed with Gmail I now use it to automatically pull my email from various POP3 accounts (ISP mail, domain etc) and so use Gmail as main source of checking email from any computer.

gmail has some privacy issues - if you're concerned about that; search google (LOL!) about it.

Gmail doesn't allow any email deletion last time I checked. It just archives it.

Personally, I don't like the idea of something/one keeping all my history unless he's my doctor.

I personally endorse mail.yahoo.com

You can actually delete stuff on gmail, you have been able to do this for ages.
