My buddy recently quit Warcraft and asked the same question.
I told him to play the Mass Effect series. He picked them up and hammered them over the last 3 weeks and absolutely loved them.
Just talking to him at work sparked my interest in replaying them so here I am now working my way through part 2. I'm making sure to complete all side missions this time in preparation for part 3 which I never got around to playing.
They are amazing games and I'd forgotten how good the first one was.
The thing with Mass Effect is you have to get through the introduction scenes where you visit a large city. This can be quite boring on the first play through, but once you leave that city the game really is awesome. On replaying the game I appreciated the first 3 hours more, but I know two people who where put off by it, as was my friend who I recently recommended it too.
Just looking at my phone now he text 'how long is this. I'm getting bored' 2 hours later he said 'This is amazing, Can't believe I never played this before'

He also said he has no intention of going back to Warcraft and is thinking of getting Dragon Age Origins. He was also asking if Dead Space is made by Bioware
