Need A New GFX Card

Did i say anything about price?

As it is i would still choose the 260 - but that is my opinion.

I was fortunate enough to get it for a good price though - well under the £200 budget.

I wouldn't have recommended it if it wasn't within his budget.

Precisely. :)

Nope, you didn't but obviously if there is a budget it's best to give the answers that are asked?. Luckily enough there is one in B Grade to support your advice ;).

I only stated that the price was over the budget given. Nothing more, nothing less. ;)

But aside from that i also knew that there were other 260's available within his budget.

Just offering an opinion on what i would buy - nothing more, nothing less. ;) :D

It's very interesting to see the sway of opinion on this forum.. If he had asked this same question even a month ago he would have got 4870, 4870, 4870, 4870, 260 is slow, 4870, 4870.. I even remember when it was being compared to the 280!!

Now everyones had a chance to go out and buy them, and not just read a load of average FPS benchmarks, the 260 is coming back strong, as a lot of people have realised it's actually a damn good card. And better in many situations (Especially minimum FPS and consistent performance). I wonder if people are just buying ATI now as they feel they deserve their money for bringing GFX prices down to an acceptable level..

Didn't see that one :D.

I was only going by the price at OCUK (excluding B grade).

I'd take the GTX260 or the 4870 for CoD4. I can only relate about the 4870 though and the 8800GTX. 8800GTX ran it well, 4870 ran it much better. Practically like that with all my games apart from the odd few which show little difference at times. 4870 runs CoD4 at 2048x1536 at 4xAA pretty well which is impressive.

The new GTX 260 does seem good though after reading some reviews. I'd get one over the 4870 but the results are pretty close still so as long as it's in the same price bracket then I'd get the new GTX 260. There ya go GT, I've agreed with you :p lol.

I love the way I was a heretic for suggesting I'd get a 260 a month ago now everyone likes them :p

Was it the swanky new one or the old one though?. If it's the old one then it's pretty even. The new one however is faster but at an increased price.

If it's worth it or not comes down the persons system, what resolution they would be gaming at and the games they play to see if that extra money would be worth spending.

Honestly you wouldn't have even got a reply that reasoned a month ago, whether it was the new 216sp model or not! :p

Edit: see Mr.B's topic when he ditched his 4870 for an overclocked 260 when they were still very new.. Then tried out a 4870x2 and went to a 280 IIRC? He nearly got e-lynched! :D

I hear you on that one. I was one of the ones arguing at first that the 4870 was the best buy after the GTX280 but after seeing a few new reviews it was a lot closer than I thought even though I'd rather have the 4870 in that situation (personal preference). If I was buying now it would be the 216 GTX260 without a doubt.

Scoure the offers sections on various e-tailers to pick up a GTX260. Don't bother with the 9800GTX+.. If you can stretch the budget a tenner you can almost garuntee one.

Think most people would still say get a 4870 but for me i can't be bothered to keep saying the same things over and over again so i am not gonna and i think others would be sick of it like me. I would get a 4870 1gb though as it does offer more frames than the 512 and i would want the extra ram for piece of mind. I do however think the new gtx260 has changed my thinking a little. Thing is though with 8xaa and the latest 8.10 drivers have a look here to see things have not changed to much as the 4870 still wins almost all the benches.

At 4xaa the gtx260 seems to take it in the majority of games though. I still think the 4870 has more performance to come though as ati have not released any drivers really that give a good boost to many games like they usually have done by this stage. Really not sure if its because they can't unlock more fps which they have done on all new cards releases i have seen or its because there have been so many bugs needing fixed.
