Need a new GFX card

Hi all,

I'm thinking of upgrading my old GF7950 to something more up to date and was wondering which card I should go for in the £100-£200 price range (closer to the lower limit actually as I'll be needing a new PSU to go with it). My monitor is a 4 year old 19'' Samsung LCD if that's of any importance (seem to remember someone mentioning on these boards that it's not worth dishing out on too powerful GFX cards if the monitor is less than 20''). As for the motherboard, it's ASUS Crosshair III Formula.

Many thanks in advance for any tips.

Most would recommend the ATI 5770, it's a cracking card and is very quiet and energy efficient :)

Thanks for all the replies guys, looks like 5770 it is. Someone asked what res my monitor runs at - it's 1280x1024 (yeah...it's that old).

Few more follow up questions though:

a) Which 5770 would you specifically recommend?

b) Would a 650W Corsair PSU be enough to power it up? I'm not planning to run two GFX cards in any foreseeable future.

650W will be more than enough to power it, even 600W would be enough :)

BTW, if you are able to spend around £140-150ish then I'd recommend the Vapor-X edition:

Is the vapor-x really that much better? All I can see is the 10 MHz faster clock :S Or are there some hidden features that make it more preferable (i.e. quieter)?

It's a much cooler card, temps wont go sky high when it's under load, which evidently will increase the lifespan of the card as it's running much cooler in comparison to other cards. Also it'll be very quiet; I had one in the past so I can talk from personal experience here :)

^ temps and lifespan don't really matter

it can easily take the temps and if you're buying a new graphics card then chances are you upgrade frequently enough that you don't need to take lifespan into account

Well given that I'm still currently running a GF7950GT you can guess how often I upgrade :P

EDIT: Order placed - tomorrow my pooter will be sporting Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 Vapor-X 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card and Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK) instead of its old parts :) Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Given the choice you'd rather prefer a cooler card than one that gets quite hot no? :P

Agree on lifespan point though but I guess he wants to run this one for a while and is not planning on adding another in the foreseeable future
