Hello all,

I have just upgraded my pc and I would like to get a pci express graphics card, Only problem is I am on a budget which is £40. I used to have a 6600GT AGP and I have been looking at the nvidia 8500 range - are these better than the 6600GT? Also are the ATI's of similar money any good?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-007-PV&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1010 - Is this one any good?

The only games I will be playing is half life 2, farcry and maybe some other games but I am not fussed about playing them at high res so long as it will play at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 (Screen only does 1280 x 1024) that will be ok.

Thanks in advance,

Tim.

Not sure thats a good choice. I'd try stretch to a 8600 for about 50 quid or look about for a Geforce 7 series card or ATI x1900 or something

Can you stretch to this.

It's not great but still miles better than 8500GT and will play HL2 nicely at max details and your resolution. Well worth the extra £20.

Looks quite a long card, does anyone know if this will fit in my case? I have got a Silverstone tec LC20B.

If it does not fit will the OcUK GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 be good enough to play most games ok?

Tim.

You can get cards like the 7800gtx for £45 second hand now. The card steve has suggested is great value for money too.

If I was to go for the HIS ATI Radeon HD 2900 GT 256MB would my power supply be good enough as I have been reading reviews that it is very power hungry. I have got a Hyper 530w or 580w and I am running 2 sata drives and a dvd drive / dvd rw drive.

Just been looking and ocuk have stopped selling the his ati 2900 and the other one has no eta. Just been looking and do you think the following cards will be ok -

Point of View GeForce 8600 GT "MotoGP Edition" 512MB DDR2 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Asus ATI Radeon EAH2600XT HTDP Silent 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

The Ati seems to be better spec that I can tell. Will both of these cards run most modern games in high or ultra settings running at 1280 x 1024 as I dont want to run any higher then that?

The cards are pretty similar in performance. They will both struggle to run any of the new games that are graphically based. They have about 30% of the performance of the top cards which themselves are already about to get "outdated".

Just replaced my 7800GT OC, which was a very good card, and can be had for £30 second hand. For £40 Id suggest a high end 7 series.
