Need a new ISP for my parents...

Hey,

My parents are currently with F2S, but the speeds have been pretty shabby of late. They have an awesome line which syncs at the full whack 8Mb, but throughput is about 4Mb average. Currently paying £28/month with a 50GB cap, and I'm looking for an ISP which is similarly priced (ideally less) and with a 30GB+ cap.

Can't get LLU or cable because they live in a silly little village. Best I can find is Zen who are £25/month for a MAX line, but the cap is only 20GB :( I could hook them up with the free Orange broadband (my mobile rental qualifies for the offer), but I hear their service is pretty shabby...

So what good, solid, RELIABLE service providers are out there?

Cheers,

Suman

Entanet resellers

I can recommend any Entanet resellers (we are one) who will provide you with a first class service and a 330GB (30GB peak and 300 off-peak) allowance package for £19.99 per month.

Regards,

Rupert

You're going to trip over the forum rules Rupert - 'No promotion of business interests'.

You need to let other people report how good Entanet resellers are :)

For the OP, the only downside to the Entanet products is that they have an extended 'off-peak' period that covers the entire weekend so speeds can suffer at those times due to demand from people using up their large off peak allowances.

Enta operates an 'Anti-Loss Tool' which gradually slows down everyone on a particular pipe to keep the load below the level at which packet loss would occur.

If your parents do use a healthy amount of their allowance then Enta may well suit them, if on the other hand they are only casual users who expect full speed on the occasions when they use it Enta may not be such a good option.

UKFSN is one of the more popular Entanet resellers, have a look at the thread in this forum for more comments about Entanet services :

Hey,

That's the difficult part, they're sort of in the middle ground... their usage is anywhere between 5GB and 30GB per month (average about 15GB I guess) and they download a lot of streaming audio/video and use VoIP. My dad expects it to be really snappy when he uses it though!

I reccomend UKFSN any day , fantastic service and have seen no diffrence in speed during any time of day. + 300GIG downloads rate at weekends

If they make a lot of use of streaming media and VOIP then I'd have trouble suggesting Entanet as an ideal ISP.

They would be fine most of the time but there will be occasions, especially after 10pm or at the weekends when things are not as perfect as they could be.

Zen would be the obvious choice if they were not downloading as much as they are. The Zen 800 Pro account would be ideal but it would increase the cost a bit.

The problem is that with the amount they are downloading they are not going to find an ideal solution and save money at the same time.

Worth reading the comments at www.adslguide.org

I do agree that UKFSN are a great reseller and Entanet is a perfect place to be if you need 300GB a month, but there are plenty of comments from people who get impacted by the slowdowns when the off-peak downloads cut it.

If you are prepared to do a few disconnects to hop onto a less full pipe you can often avoid the worst of the problems but it is not exactly ideal if you make heavy use of sensitive protocols like streaming media and VOIP during the 'off-peak' periods.

2Mbps is plenty for those types of protocols. At 10pm and on weekends the heavy users make use of the generous allowances and the Anti Loss Tool kicks in which limits everyones connection in 0.5Mb steps down until 2Mbps until load decreases (usually 1am). This can all be monitored here: http://noc.enta.net/

Have a look at IDnet as well.

The part that is not quite so obvious is that 2Mb is just where the 'graceful' part of the tool ends, it doesn't mean that everyone gets a minimum of 2Mb.

Once the tool hits 2Mb it stops trying to cope with the overload and lets the packet loss start.

It really shouldn't be that big an issue most of the time but the 10pm - midnight period isn't one to expect perfect speed.

As I've said, it is a great ISP if you need the download volume, if you don't then there are better places to be.
