Currently got a steel series siberia v2 headset. And all people do on vent etc is moan about mic quality and it sucking at blocking out background noise/leaky cans and its beginning to trigger me so I've decided to drop a few quid on a new one.

Honestly got no idea how much I should spend on a stand alone but just need something that ticks all those boxes. So a range of prices would be preferred say recommend budget one and a mid range one.

Sorry for the vague price range boys.

EDIT: Or a new decent headset with a better built in mic, I'll most likely be going second hand so can grab more bang for buck

I use a modmic, or rather did use a modmic when i was playing online. Sound quality is pretty damn good and it means that you can use actual headphones instead of using gaming headsets...

Personally I don't like having to combine headphones with a microphone to make a headset, because it almost always ends up with sub-par versions of each. I also really value having wireless headphones, and there still aren't many wireless headsets.

Headphones: Sennheiser RS180
Microphone: Behinger B-1 + Mounting Arm + Behringer 1002 mixer

People say they've never heard anyone with a clearer mic - and that's only an entry level mic.

You can spend less or more depending on what's most important to you and your budget - but having the option of where to spend it, and not having to replace both at the same time is really good (IMO everyone should do this).

Thats a smiliar set up to what i use now.

Audio-Technica AT2020 + Rode Arm + Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.

Of couse its going to be better but costs way more. Maybe worth getting a USB Blue mic mounted on a cheap arm.

How would the modmic compare? No idea, but really if you aren't generating content with the microphone you really don't need to spend that much on one.

Glad to see people are starting to demand better quality gear than gamer style headsets.

Some products you might consider:

Samson Meteor USB mic. Good mic for a good price.

KRK KNS-8400
Beyer DT770 Pro
Both decent headphones for around the £100 mark (I own both, prefer the KRK's for sound but the Beyer's for comfort).

How would this compare to a blue yeti? The yeti gets great reviews but its enormous.

The Yeti probably records better quality audio. But, as it's likely going to be on your desk it's going to pick up the noise of your keyboard & mouse. The modmic is noise cancelling (and can be uni-directional) so it won't pick up desk noise.

Some good trends in here with positive feedback. I am also in the market for a standalone mic as I get the same complaints all the time, which has made me stuck to push to talk and even that has its issues.

Will keep an eye on other suggestions here.

Snookums I have a modmic I'm not using. Can stick it in the mm if your interested.

That would be excellent. Don't want to discuss outside of mm so dropped you a trust just say I've got a wanted thread open. would appreciate you dropping in there :)

Yeah that was my option, push to talk or new mic. New mic it is!
