(I know there's a few of these threads out there sorry!)

I recently moved from BT over to Virgin (Same-ish package £5 less per month) 'Down the Phone Line' not Cable, which is not as fast as Virgin said it would be (minimum), but that's another thread all together!! :D .

The Router (Netgear DGN1000) they supplied is... well... crap!! (looking on the net its almost the worst Modem/Router available anywhere!!).. It looses connection to the DSL on a regular basis and the Wi-Fi (we live in a Flat!) just about reaches our Spare room (where the Laptop is) and won't reach our bedroom at all so our Phones and my Tablet drop off Wi-Fi unless you hold them near the passageway door! (I've tried all channels and B, G, N settings). Plus if I'm streaming a movie to my TV and the wife wants to serf the tinterweb it drops my movie in favor of the Web!!

Plus I'm soon to be working from home 2 days a week and need a reliable and decent/fast connection.

So I'm in the market for a New Modem/Router Really would like a Dual Band one so I can get away from everyone else signals on the 2.4Ghz band.

Simultaneous 2.4/5Ghz would be a bonus too rather than switchable!!

Would like USB but its no important as my Printer is Wi-Fi

I have about £75 - £100 to spend (so the Billion is out!!).

Been looking at Belkin and Linksys but they have some very good reviews and some appalling reviews!!..

Any recommendations??? :):)

you have £100 to spend on a router but didn't bother to research the ISP? virgin adsl have been widely regarded as one of the worst ISPs since the dawn of time. :(

sorry for not having anything constructive to add. :p

Couldn't get Sky, Talktalk are crap (been with em before) and wanted to get away from BT... not many other choices in my area of Swindon! :(

Didn't have the £100 at the time, but with the fuel saving (working from home) and some money left from our Wedding, we can afford it!! (just)

Have you tried updating the DGN1000 firmware (if needed). Latest version seems to be 1.1.00.41.

If you do update firmware then perform a hardware reset on router to ensure any legacy settings are wiped before re-entering you connection and wireless details.

and wanted to get away from BT

Yes but the trouble is you are still technically with BT as they sell the package which Virgin then sell to you at a profit. Virgin oversubscribe their service to squeeze as much out of the expensive BT wholesale and this means pretty much everyone gets a poor result.

The DGN1000 is the bargain basement Netgear product so don't expect miracles. The DG834GT is a far more competent modem/router and while it is quite old now it works really well with ADSL and can squeeze extra speed. Maybe you could pair it with a dual band N wifi Access point. Might be cheaper than buying one of those Billion things which are supposed to be pretty good.
