Hi guys,

i've been on TW/virgin for years! and recently upgraded to the 20mb connection... i have a motorola sb4100 (modem)and a netgear RP614v2(router).. after doing some research, it seems my modem and router can't take 20mb:confused:.

i'm gunna ring virgin tomorrow and get a new modem.. problem is i dont know what router to buy.. i play lots of games and have 2 other people on the network(who all so play games).. it has to be able to forward all ports and have fast speed when transfering from computer to computer.

any sugestions?

Thanks

Unless you've got an urge to go wireless, I'd be more inclined to go for the Linksys WRT54GL (you can disable the wireless), mainly because of the range of firmware for it and the price.

The only loss you might notice is the WRT has 100Mbps switch ports (the same as the RP614) and the Netgear has 1000Mbps (not that you'll ever achieve that) - both are going to be faster than your internet connection, and if you wanted to add GigE to the WRT, the combination of the WRT and a gigabit switch would still be cheaper than buying the Netgear.

thanks for the replys guys, i also have a wrt54gs i think thst whats its called... but i cant foward any ports what so ever so i'll stay clear of the linksy routers.

virgin are sending me a new modem 4-5 business days, i like the look of the WNR854T but its abit out of my price range

What version is it? If it's <5, you could try some of the third party firmware that's available for it.

If you can't forward any ports on your WRT54GS, it's either broken or you're doing something wrong because you definitely can forward ports on it...

Agreed. I've several and I find it so versatile and should I have any problems (which I've not) I just whack dd-wrt or tomato on them and it's perfect.

hmm pretty sure i'm not doing anything wrong... i mean its not rocket science, i go to port forwarding.. add the selected port range and click enable then apply, it does not work i have also tried setting my ip as DMZ which didnt work either... for the records i have wrt54gs version 6, and dont have any problem portfowarding on my current router (RP614v2)

EDIT: if i was able to get this router working the way i want it to work.... would it handle my 20mb connection? and would it be fast at loading webpages etc(sorry i know little about networking)

just searched the web and it seems to be a know problem with the wrt54gsv6 looks like i need to upgrade the firmware to DD-WRT v23 SP2 (09/15/06) micro, i'll do that later on today and post back the results.

My thoughts are you already have the (almost) best router for the job. Use the WRT54G with DD-WRT. :)

thanks man, your proberly right:cool:. think i'll install the new firmware tomorrow and give it a whirl, nothing to loose i've been reading another fourm where some 1 has said the wrt54gs can handle 34mbs can any 1 confirm this?

It will be fine all the way to its full 100 Mb/s on its wired ports, both for the LAN and Internet. Torrents will kill it when using stock firmware, as they did with my WRT54G v1.1. The custom firmware solves this though.

Obviously wireless will vary, but with a good signal you will get some of the best speeds available for a 802.11g connection :)

Just have a go! Got to be worth a try before you splash out and buy a new one for £100! It's great fun too!

EDIT: It has 16MB of RAM. The 2MB you refer to is the size of the flash memory, which is why you have to use the basic version of DD-WRT :)

i have a wrt54g and their wrvs4400n wireless-N with 1gb switch built in and honestly, the wrt54g is the better router with its custom firmware. it just does things that i cant do with my 4400n:)

They are virtually identical. :) The only difference being yours has a smaller flash memory, but a faster CPU (than my 1.1) and SpeedBooster.

Do it, go go! :p

First link on google? :p http://www.dd-wrt.com/

You want the latest GENERIC Micro version. Then follow these instructions http://www.bitsum.com/openwiking/owbase/ow.asp?WRT54G5_CFE

:)

Thanks for your help... top man!!

just did a quick speed test (using virgin gaming patch ftp) and got 1.55mb/s, with my rp614v2 i was only getting 1.4mb/s, so its inproved allready.. browsing the web seems alittle faster as well.... just waiting for my modem from virgin then i can post back some more results, happy chappy at the moment :)
