Used the pc this morning no problems. Came home tonight pushed the power switch nothing. Tried a few times fans ran once slowly then nothing.

Had a feeling my psu was dieing as it did lightly squeal on occassions.

The psu was a hiper 580w R.

I want a replacement, my rig isnt that juice hungry 6800gt, couple of HDDs. AMD64 3700 SD Gig ram. Two optical drives, floppy. I'm not going to upgrade the rig for 2 or 3 more years if it lasts.

So I want a PSU for about the hiper money, what do you recommend. Basically I want to just slot it in this rig if the mobo isn't dead. The mobo is a asus a8n-sli.

Thanks for your time, need to get this ordered asap.

Right using an online calculator my usage is around 400w tops.

Will any of these fit in my rig?

Seasonic S12 Energy+ 550W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply

Enermax Liberty 500W ELT500AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU

Enermax Noisetaker 535W EG565AX-VE(W) SFMA ATX2.0 SLI Compliant PSU

Basically whats the difference between ATX 2 and 2.2 can I use either with my mobo (a8n-sli)

All will fit in providing you have a standard ATX case (I'd assume you must having had a Hiper and a normal ATX motherboard in there). The difference between ATX 2.0 and ATX 2.2 is minor, to be ATX 2.2 compliant the only physical change is that the plug for the motherboard must have 24pins, I think on the ATX 2.0 standard you could have 20pin+4pin detachable.

I'd probably get the Liberty 500w as it is modular but any of them would be fine. :)

Thanks guys, didnt really want another hiper as everyone I know thats had one has gone pop. I just hope as mine happened in standby it hasn't taken the mobo.

Will order the liberty now. :) I would prefer modular like the hiper.

Ok I've put the liberty in tonight and luckily the hiper took nothing with it.

A quick query.

One of the blokes at work today suggested my squealing on the hiper was due to it being turned on at the psu/wall all the time thus over heating and destroying a capacitor over time.

Is it recommended to turn the PSU off at the switch on the power supply? I must admit Ive never done it unless going on holiday. The reason Ive never bothered is the fan runs on shut down thus cooling it before shutting off.

I've never heard of this before so I suspect the bloke at work may be a bit confused, I guess it could be possible if a PSU is particularly badly made that current would still pass through and cause capacitors to be damaged but it is unlikely since most people never give it a second thought and their PSUs are fine. A good quality PSU shouldn't allow any sort of damage to occur to itself simply by being left on.

I personally wouldn't go switching a PSU off at the wall every time or use the switch on the PSU, it is very unlikely to have any positive impact and may have a negative impact if you have a PSU fan running to cool it after shutdown.

Thanks, I do think thats maybe what killed my hiper though, as it didnt die under load. It died sometime during the day with only standby power. When I went to take it out, it was very hot.

But if no one else has had a problem on standby then I will bow to the knowledge on here.

Thanks. I'm just thankfull I got lucky unlike others it took nothing else with it.
